      Description: 17th Century Pair of Satirical Hand Colored Etchings by Nicolas Guerard (1648-1719) was a French etcher and engraver who is probably best known for his maps and book illustrations that were produced in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries | This pair of etchings are framed satirical hand colored prints: 1) depicting a man in celebration with gold coins, and 2) a contrasting lady grief stricken over having no money; each wearing period attire. Each have French titles and descriptions of the illustrations. The male figure has a basket of gold coins that spill and get lost in various prodigal activities. These etchings are over three hundred year old original works, and may be the only existing examples. The etchings are colored by hand with watercolor. A notation in the lower left states that Guerard conceived the original design and produced the etching. The prints have age related toning, but do not appear to be stained. The etchings are professionally framed in gilt wood frames with felt mats. There is some wear and gilt loss to the frames. The visible dimensions of the etchings are 10 1/2" H x 7 1/2" W; The outer frame dimensions are 18" H x 14" W. The item offered for sale is a pair of framed satirical prints depicting a man and woman dressed in the period. There is some writing in French that probably describes what was being illustrated. The male figure has a basket of gold coins that spill and get lost in various prodigal activities. There is a similar known etching that was made by Guerard that is available as a reproduction. The etchings for sale are actual three hundred year old prints and may be the only existing examples. The etchings are colored by hand with watercolor. A notation in the lower left states that Guerard conceived the original design and produced the etching. The prints are old and toned but have no stains. The color is muted. The prints are expensively framed in gilt wood frames and felt mats. There is some wear and gilt loss to the frames. The prints have not been examine outside of the frames. The visible dimensions of the prints are 7 1/2" x 10 1/2". The outer frame dimensions are 14" x 18".
