Klaas GUBBELS (Rotterdam 1934) Painter, sculptor, graphic artist, photographer From 1949 to 1951 Gubbels attended the Rotterdam Crafts School, where he graduated in advertising painting. He then took an evening course at the Academy of Visual Arts, before studying at the Arnhem School of Art from 1952 to 1958. After his studies he continued to live in Arnhem. From 1965 to 1992, Gubbels taught at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. He also taught briefly at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in the 1970s and at the Academy of Visual Arts in Arnhem in the 1980s. Exhibitions and prizes In 1971 Gubbels received the Quarles van Ufford Prize from the Province of Gelderland. In 2004-2005 there was a large retrospective of Gubbels' work in the Museum for Modern Art Arnhem. Many Dutch museums and companies have work by Gubbels in their collections. A number of his works can also be seen in public spaces.

In the 1980s Gubbels had a temporary studio in the French department of Ardèche. Klaas Gubbels is known for his still lifes of coffee pots, tables and chairs, rendered in a simple form language. As time went by, his work became increasingly abstract and restricted in terms of visual themes (also known as the strength of his art). He uses various techniques, such as lithography, mural painting, woodcut, objet trouvé, glass, metal and photography, watercolor and oil paint.
