In the late 19th century, young Plains Indian warriors imprisoned for waging war were encouraged by their military captors to record their lives and traditions on paper. Their drawings were executed in pencil, ink, and watercolor on the pages of discarded ledgers. They depicted their conquests at war (and other rites of passage for young Indian men) on these ledger pages in a style that this artist Terrance Guardipee has been instrumental in reviving and honoring. Guardipee is 'an internationally acclaimed Blackfeet painter and ledger artist... one of the first Native artists to revive the historical ledger art tradition...".
