Emile Albert Gruppé (American 1896-1978) Morning Sun signed 'Emile A. Gruppé' (lower right), bears title (verso) oil on canvas 91 x 102cm, unframed Footnote: Emile Gruppé was an American plein air artist best known for his impressionistic landscapes, seascapes, and depictions of fishing communities. He was influenced by the French Impressionists and in particular Monet. A member of the Cape Ann School of artists, this probably depicts a cove in Gloucester, Massachusetts where Gruppé lived and had a studio. From 1940–1970, he ran the Gloucester School of Painting at Rocky Neck, on Smith Cove, where he taught the painter Otis Cook, and influenced artists such as Bill Wray, Nathalie Nordstrand and Carl W. Illig. According to Carol Lowrey, "Gruppé's name became synonymous with vigorous portrayals of the boats, shorelines and the ever-changing skies of Cape Ann, but he was equally drawn to the scenery he encountered in the countryside of western New York and Vermont and along the coasts of Florida. The product of an artist lauded for his acute sensitivity for color, his penchant for robust brushwork and his careful study of nature, Gruppé's deftly rendered canvases are...replete with a sense of place as well as a palpable feeling of light and air." (Emile A. Gruppé (1896-1978), exhibition catalogue, New York, 2008, p. 2).

His childhood was spent in the Netherlands as his father, Charles P. Gruppé, painted with the Hague School of art and acted as a dealer for various Dutch painters in the United States. The family returned permanently to the States around 1913 when rumblings of World War I were brewing. All of Emile’s siblings became involved in the arts: Paulo Mesdag (1891-1979) was a cellist, Karl Heinrich (1893-1982) was a sculptor, and Virginia Helena Gruppé (1907-1980) was a watercolorist. He studied at the National Academy in New York City and then traveled to Paris in 1916 to study at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In 1917 he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving with them for a year. When the war ended he settled in Gloucester, Massachusetts, and became a member of the Cape Ann school of artists, eventually opening his own studio. Although Gruppé is best known for his variety of impressionistic landscapes, he also painted figures and portraits. His modern style was heavily influenced by the French Impressionist Monet. From 1940 to 1970 he ran the Gloucester School of Painting at Rocky Neck on Smith Cove. From 1960 onward he wintered in Naples, Florida, where he painted tropical scenes. In the 1970s he wrote two books about brushwork, color, and technique. He was a member of the Salmagundi Club, the North Shore Art Association, the Rockport Art Association, the Gloucester Society of Artists, the Allied Artists of America, the Longboat Key Art Association, and the Sarasota Art Association. Gruppé died in 1978 at his home in Gloucester. His son, Robert C. Gruppé, also became a painter and maintains the Gruppé Gallery at Rocky Neck, while his daughter Emilie Alexander runs the Emile A. Gruppe Gallery in Jericho, Vermont. Both galleries feature their father’s paintings, among others from the Cape Ann group, and his pieces are found in many private collections along the East Coast.

    Est: $12,000 - $15,000

Gruppe, Emile Albert (1896-1978) Painting. canvas signed lower right. Boldly wrought in intense palette knife. The Gateway- titled on verso by Emile Gruppe is a chronicling oil painting. Depicting a Banyan tree in in front of the artists home in Naples, Florida. Under the shade of the tree, works a groundskeeper peaceful yet somber. Thick palette knife work embodies a complex orientation of color and a simplicity of an earlier lifestyle. Florida paintings by Gruppe are far more scarce than his New England counterparts. Fewer than a handful of these southern gems have come to public auction in 20 years of records. the present example of his personal home and is the largest format ever in Florida subject matter to be offered. Canvas measures 30x36 framed to overall size of 40x49. Born in Rochester, New York, Emile Gruppe became a renowned New England landscape and marine painter. Although he is best known for his variety of Impressionistic landscapes, he also painted figures and portraits. His modern style was largely inherited from French Impressionist Claude Monet. "Lily Pads," date and location unknown, one of Gruppe's landscapes, attests to Monets influence and is similar to some of the paintings in Monets "Water Lily" series. He was the son of landscape artist Charles Paul Gruppe, and was born in 1896 in Rochester, New York. He had a very strong art background. In addition to being raised by an artistic father, he was also educated in art at The Hague in the Netherlands and in New York City at the National Academy of Design and The Arts Students League. He also received instruction from artists George Bridgeman, Charles Chapman, Richard Miller and John F. Carlson, with whom he would later founded, in 1942, the Gruppe Summer School in Gloucester, Massachusetts. He made his permanent studio in Gloucester. His artistic career had begun in 1915, but was briefly interrupted in 1917 when he spent a year in the United States Navy. Gruppe's prolific career brought him many awards and memberships. His popular painting "Winter, Vermont," date and location unknown, won the Richard Mitton Award at the Jordan Marsh Exhibition in Boston in 1843. Condition: Very Fine

Gruppe, Emile (1896-1978) American Artist. Oil on Masonite Board- signed lower right. A sunny Modern Harbor scene, showing a traffic jam at the dock, as some are hoisting the sail preparing to set sail, while others are furling their sail and heading in for the day. Board measures 12x16 framed to overall size of 18x22. Emile Albert Gruppe was born in Rochester New York. He lived the early years of his life in the Netherlands as his father Charles Paulo Gruppe, painted with the Hague school of art and acted as a dealer for the Dutch painters in the US. The family returned permanently to the states around 1913 when rumblings of World War I were brewing. In the early 1930’s Emile found his way to the fishing town of Gloucester, Massachusetts and to the area known as Rocky Neck, one of the oldest artist communities in the US. Here he established his home and The Gloucester School of Painting (1940 – 1970) in an old school house with his mentor John Fabian Carlson. Later, the village of Cambridge and town of Jeffersonville, Vermont with their surrounding mountains became a second campus for his students. And still later, as he grew older, the warm breezes and good fishing of Naples Florida provided another palette for his landscapes. Condition: Very Fine
