            Painting (either oil or acrylic on paper) by the renowned American artist, Charles C. Gruppe (1928 - 2019). Gruppe, who is the nephew of Emile Gruppe and the grandson of the elder Charles P. Gruppe, is well-regarded for blending expressive coloration and painterly brushstrokes with traditional New England / Northeastern themes and subjects. In this painting, we see a copse of birch trees with bright red foliage. The land and water around these trees is made up of grey-blues and purples, with hints of other colors throughout. Gulls can be seen circling about. Signed by Gruppe in lower right corner. The painting is matted and framed, and the frame is shrink wrapped. Painting is in excellent new, as-bought condition. 28 1/4" wide by 21" tall (opening in matte), 36 1/4" wide by 29 1/4" tall by 7/8" deep.             Oil on canvas painting of a sailing ship tied up at a pier by noted Canadian - American artist Charles Gruppe (1860 - 1940). Mid-20th century. Painterly brushstrokes are used to show the scene of a large sailing ship tied up at a pier, while smaller boats are moored nearby. Warehouses and shacks line the pier. Seagulls fly throughout the composition. Possibly depicts Rockport, Massachusetts. Painting is signed by Gruppe in lower right corner. Good condition overall. Minor areas of varnish / dirt that has browned. Framed. The painting is held onto the frame by tape on the stretcher. Should be secured better. Stretcher is marked "Property of R. Barry".             Property from a Private Collection, St. Augustine, FL Description: Charles Gruppe (MA/NY/Netherlands/Canada, 1860-1940), Lute Player, Oil on Canvas, signed lower left and signed and titled on verso, depicting a seated woman playing a lute, in a giltwood frame. Frame size: 26 1/4 in. x 22 1/4 in. Charles C. Gruppe comes from a respected family of East Coast artists. Gruppe studied at Yale University and at Columbia, as well as at the National University of Mexico. He earned a Masters of Fine Art from Columbia University while on a fellowship there. He was also awarded a Fulbright Fellowship Grant and studied in Italy where he received an Italian Government Award. After school he traveled around Europe, where he traveled through France, Germany, and Holland. Gruppe spent over twenty years in Holland, becoming a celebrity artist and ultimately being patronized by the royalty of Europe. Gruppe returned to America, becoming both a painter and dealer/broker in the art of Dutch painters, and popularizing Dutch art among American collectors and art connoisseurs.
