This is one of the most graphically important posters of WWII. Its dramatic, clean design with simplified forms is a sharp contrast to the painterly techniques of WWI posters; we have firmly entered the era of graphic design in this piece. During World War ll the United States Government was very concerned about the need to keep troop movements confidential and for family members and friends of soldiers overseas to not discuss their loved ones travels and plans. There was a great fear of the enemy's agents overhearing some idle talk that could result in American lives lost. This bold graphic emphasizes that point. Glenn Grohe (1912-1956) was an American painter and illustrator who specialized in commercial art such as magazine covers and product advertisements. He created several WWII posters. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters.

This is one of the most powerful American images produced during the Second World War. It is a terrifying, hypnotizing vision of a German soldier (seen forbiddingly submerged in shadows) with his eyes staring straight out at the viewer, rising ominously above the bold typography. Original Charles C. Gehm (1929-2015) Dell Book Co, Paperback Cover Illustration, watercolor and gouache on board. Includes the front cover of the Dell paperback "Millies Boy" that this illustration was done for. Professionally framed and matted. In frame measures 16"x23"x1". Weight 5 pds. Born in Alliance, Ohio on September 20, 1929, Charles Gehm won the Scholastic Art Awards Certificate of Merit in 1948 along with a scholarship to attend the Columbus College of Art and Design. Charles enjoyed great success as an illustrator, and during his long career created book cover art for every major publishing house. His collectible art projects include a series of limited edition Gone With The Wind prints and Grimm's Fairy Tales plates, and posters for the films Barry Lyndon, The Island, The River, The Betsey, and Death on the Nile. In 2002, The board of the NYSE selected him to create their annual Christmas card. Also a fine artist, he received numerous awards, and his oil paintings have been shown in galleries in NY, AZ., OH, MA. and CT. As an adjunct professor, Charles taught illustration, painting and design at WCSU and Pratt Institute.

"In time of war, everyone, soldier or not, is responsible for his neighbor's life, and the greatest rule is silence... The task of these graphic artists was very complicated. There were no ready-made symbols for matters of security, no flags unfurled behind uniforms, no saving cross. It was necessary to transmit a delicate message containing a shade of paranoia..." Signed Within Plate: Grohe 1912-56 Date of Work: 1942 Description: This German soldier on this very famous poster bears a striking resemblance to Darth Vader, the primary antagonist in George Lucasâ€™s Star Wars films. The soldier is wearing a German Stahlhelm M16 steel helmet and staring directly out from the image. Under Nazi rule, the helmet became closely associated with national German pride, while for the Allies it became a symbol of evil. The poster also helped many American workers on their toes. Overall, the lurking figure was a chilling reminder of how dire the situation appeared from the end of 1941 well into 1943. This collection is from Dr. David Orzeck by descent to his daughter Lida Orzeck and the entire collection is offered without reserve. Lida Orzeck came across more than 750 vintage war posters from World War I and World War II in her familyâ€™s home basement that her father, David Orzeck, a Brooklyn doctor, had meticulously collected. Discovered in 1970, the posters â€" of which few pristine prints remain with the exception of the National Archives and the Library of Congress â€" were in mint condition, neatly catalogued and folded in brown wrapping paper from grocery stores. Size: 10"L x 14"H Weight: <1 ounce Provenance: Dr. David Orzeck Condition: Poster has original fold marks and has not been exposed to sunlight, thus preserving the vibrant colors.
