Juan Gris Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, Illustrator, Plastic Art, b. 1887 - d. 1927

José Victoriano (Carmelo Carlos) González-Pérez (23 March 1887 – 11 May 1927), better known as Juan Gris (Spanish: ['xwan 'g?is]; French: [g?i]), was a Spanish painter born in Madrid who lived and worked in France most of his life. Closely connected to the innovative artistic genre Cubism, his works are among the movement's most distinctive.

Gris was born in Madrid and later studied engineering at the Madrid School of Arts and Sciences. There, from 1902 to 1904, he contributed drawings to local periodicals. From 1904 to 1905, he studied painting with the academic artist José Moreno Carbonero. It was in 1905 that José Victoriano González adopted the more distinctive name Juan Gris.[1]

In 1909 Lucie Belin (1891–1942)—Gris' wife—gave birth to Georges Gonzalez-Gris (1909–2003), the artist's only child. The three lived at the Bateau-Lavoir, 13 Rue Ravignan, Paris, from 1909 to 1911. In 1912 Gris met Charlotte Augusta Fernande Herpin (1894–1983), also known as Josette. Late 1913 or early 1914 they lived together at the Bateau-Lavoir until 1922. Josette Gris was Juan Gris' second companion and unofficial wife.

Alongside Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, Juan Gris was one of the founders and main representatives of "Synthetic Cubism". After the First World War, artists developed a longing for a more classical ideal ("retour à l'ordre"). Unlike Picasso and Braque, Gris remained committed to Cubism, but developed it in a new direction. He continued to paint his groundbreaking still lifes, in which he juxtaposed and superimposed pictorial elements as a collage, but now called his new style "deductive". He believed that the coloured forms should suggest certain private relationships between the elements of an imaginary reality. It is a much freer form of representation and the colourfulness is astonishing with an unprecedented opulence. His style became more poetic and he often used a wavy outline. He also increasingly worked for the theatre and created costumes and decorations for Serge Diaghilev's "Ballets Russes" and for a production of Charles Gounod's opera "La colombe", among others. Gris was committed to communicating his art from the very beginning. In 1924, he gave the famous lecture entitled "Des possibilités de la peinture" ("on the possibilities of painting") at the Sorbonne in Paris. At this time, he was at the height of his career and a much sought-after artist; the collector Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) wrote in 1924 that Gris was a perfect painter. Renal insufficiency led to a rapid deterioration in his health from 1925 onwards, and he died of the insidious disease far too early in 1927, aged just 40. The painting on offer here was created shortly before his death. It is considered one of the most important works of his mature style. He still gives the work a second, inner frame and differentiates the forms through clear delineations, but the rendering of the still life is much freer and more lyrical. The fruit bowl with pears and grapes as well as the lemon lying next to it and the implied bottle on the right break up the pictorial arrangement on the red tablecloth. "Le raisin" is one of the last works that Gris created - a homage to Cubism and at the same time a liberation from it. In sehr guter Erhaltung Slightly rubbed in the image margin due to former framing. In April 1919, Léonce Rosenberg exhibited the latest works by Gris in Paris. The artist wrote to Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler in a letter dated 25 August 1919: "My exhibition in April had some success. I had some success. The overall expression was not bad, and many people came [...]. I have not been dissatisfied with my work for some time, because I believe that I am finally producing something again [...]. I have also managed to free myself from an overly brutal, descriptive reality in my painting. My painting has become more poetic, to put it that way. I hope to succeed in expressing an imagined reality with pure elements of the spirit as precisely as possible: in other words, to paint imprecisely and precisely, in contrast to bad painting, which is precise and imprecise.". The present work was created during the period described by the artist in April 1919 and was probably also exhibited at Rosenberg's exhibition. Mit leichten Abreibungen am oberen Bildrand. In farbfrischer Erhaltung Wood slightly curved. With slight abrasions in the upper edge of the image. Together with Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, the Spanish painter Juan Gris was part of the core group of classical Cubism in Paris. From 1908, he lived in the Bateau-Lavoir, where he moved into a studio near Picasso. The two artists were close friends and cultivated a lively artistic exchange. At the time, they were fascinated by African art and visited the Musée dʼEthnographie du Trocadéro, among other places. This interest gradually developed into Cubist thinking, which ultimately led to the emergence of Cubism as a style-defining art movement - generally regarded as the beginning of classical modernism. From 1913 onwards, Gris created works in the spirit of "synthetic cubism". Elements such as newspapers, wallpaper, bottles, playing cards and musical instruments were rearranged and composed into paintings. "Le Journal" is based on the construction of surfaces with a strict geometry and focuses on the reduction of colour to a few tones. Painted in 1915, the then 28-year-old Gris created a characteristic and attractive pictorial composition. In keeping with the Cubist maxim, he used everyday pictorial elements such as a newspaper, a bottle, a glass, but also a tabletop with imitation wood grain and pieces of fabric or patterned wallpaper to create a striking whole. The present still life symbolises the painter's mature creative period and is a testament to his innovative spirit and artistic mastery. Juan Gris "Cubist Still Life, 1915" Oil Painting

    Est: $750 - $1,000

Juan Gris (1887-1927) was a Spanish painter and one of the leading figures of the Cubist movement, which was a revolutionary and influential art movement of the early 20th century. Gris is celebrated for his innovative approach to Cubism, which included a distinctive e of color and texture in his compositions. Here are some key points about Juan Gris and his art:1. **Early Life and Background**: Juan Gris was born as José Victoriano González-Pérez in Madrid, Spain. He moved to Paris in 1906 to pursue a career in art and became associated with the avant-garde art circles in the city.2. **Cubism**: Gris is primarily known for his association with Cubism, a movement pioneered by artists like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. Cubism sought to deconstruct and represent objects and subjects in an abstract and geometric manner, breaking them down into facets and planes.3. **Analytic and Synthetic Cubism**: Gris initially worked in the Analytic Cubist style, which involved the fragmentation and analysis of objects and forms. Later, he transitioned to Synthetic Cubism, characterized by the e of collages and the incorporation of real-world materials into the artwork.4. **Distinctive Style**: Gris had a distinctive style within Cubism. His works often featured a more restrained and ordered composition compared to the more fragmented and chaotic works of some other Cubist artists. He ed a harmonio color palette and textures to create a sense of depth and space in his paintings.5. **Still Lifes**: Gris was particularly renowned for his still-life compositions. He often painted objects such as glasses, bottles, newspapers, and mical instruments, which he carefully arranged and abstracted in his characteristic Cubist style.6. **Collaborations**: Gris collaborated with other Cubist artists, including Picasso and Braque, and he was an active participant in the Cubist movement's development and evolution.7. **Influence**: Juan Gris' contributions to Cubism and his innovative approach to the style have left a lasting impact on the art world. His e of color, texture, and composition set him apart from other Cubist painters.8. **Recognition**: Although Gris faced initial struggles in his career, he gained recognition and success as a Cubist artist in the 1910s. His works were exhibited in major art exhibitions, and he received critical acclaim.9. **Death**: Tragically, Juan Gris' life was cut short when he died of kidney failure in 1927 at the age of 40.Juan Gris' unique interpretation of Cubism, with its emphasis on color, texture, and the harmonio arrangement of forms, contributed to the evolution of the movement. His innovative approach to abstraction and still-life subjects continues to be appreciated and studied by art enthiasts and scholars today. Measures 20 x 24. Oil on Canvas. Sold "after" Gris.
