Salvatore Grippi, American 1921-2017. Salvatore Grippi, painter, printmaker and sculptor, was born in Buffalo, New York on September 30, 1921. He studied at the Albright Art School, the Museum of Modern Art School, the Art Students’ League under the G.I.Bill, Atelier 17 in New York, and Istituto Statale d’Arte in Florence as a Fullbright Scholar.

Grippi has been an influential teacher with positions at Cooper Union Art School, Fieldston School Arts Center, School of Visual Arts, Pomona College, Claremont Graduate School, and Ithaca College.

Grippi's paintings and prints have been included in a host of exhibitions throughout the United States. Grippi was a contributor to "Twenty-one Etchings and Poems" which was started at Atelier 17 in New York and published by the Morris Gallery in 1960, and was a collaboration between twenty-one Atelier 17 printmakers and twenty-one poets.

His work is included in the Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum, New York Public Library, Davis Museum and Cultural Center at Wellesley College, the Library of Congress and the Hirshhorn Collection in Washington, D.C.

Salvatore Grippi died in Brewster, Massachusetts on November 30, 2017 at age 96.

From 1951 to 1953, Grippi was at Atelier 17, the famous printmaking studio run by British artist Stanley William Hayter, who taught printmaking to Pollock and Rothko, among many other abstract expressionists. Grippi would later contribute an etching to the well-known portfolio Twenty-One Etchings and Poems [1958], including work by such artists and poets as Frank OHara, Franz Kline, Grippis brother Peter Grippe, and Dylan Thomas. From 1953 to 1955, Grippi worked in Florence, Italy, with the support of a Fulbright Scholarship. He taught for several years at the Cooper Union Art School before moving to California to teach at Pomona College. In 1968, Grippi was asked to start the art department at Ithaca College and taught there until 1991. Grippi, who worked and exhibited alongside the likes of de Kooning, Nevelson, and Kline during the heyday of Abstract Expressionism in the 1950s. In 2011, he was honored with a solo retrospective at Cornell University's Johnson Museum of Art. He was a significant figure in postwar abstraction and his work from this period has graced the walls of MoMA, the Whitney, and the Met but has seldom appeared at auction.           Salvatore Grippi (1921-2017) American artist and founder of the art department at Ithaca College. Grippi was born in Buffalo, New York. He attended the Albright Art School and the Museum of Modern Art School. He served in the armed forces during World War II. He was the recipient of a Fulbright scholarship which he used to study at the Istituto Statale dArte in Florence.
