        Est: $200 - $400

Peter J. Grippe (American, 1912-2002) Hiroshima, 1966 cast bronze bust Monogram signature and dated on back of the book. Provenance: From a private collection, Indianapolis, IN. Biography from the archives of AskArt: Born in Buffalo, New York, Peter Grippe was a sculptor, medallist, printmaker, and muralist who lived in New York City and Newton, Massachusetts. His sculpture in abstract style was closely aligned to Cubism and depicted images of lonely people trapped in their urban environment of New York City. These pieces often had appendages of "anatomical fragments such as lips, hands, feet, noses, and eyes onto skyscraper walls" to suggest a unity or blending together. (Reynolds 244). As a medallist he created the arts award medallion for Brandeis University in 1954. He also completed two sculpture murals in 1955 for the Puerto Rican Information Center in New York City. Grippe studied at the Albright-Knox Art School from 1923 to 1925 and the Art Institute of Buffalo with Edwin Dickinson. From 1944 to 1948, he attended the Atelier 17 as a printmaking student of Stanley Hayter. From 1949 to 1950, he taught at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn; from 1951 to 1954 at Atelier 17 in New York City, and from 1953 to 1980, he was Professor of Fine Arts at Brandeis University. Exhibition venues included the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, Pennsylvania Academy, Art Institute of Chicago, and the American Academy in Rome, Italy. In 1942 and 1952, he received the award for Contemporary Watercolors, Drawings and Prints from the Museum of Modern Art Source: Donald Martin Reynolds, Masters of American Sculpture Peter Hastings Falk, Editor, Who Was Who in American Art 22"H x 11"W
