LOUIS GRIMSHAW (BRITISH 1870-1943) THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT

      Est: £10,000 - £15,000

LOUIS GRIMSHAW (BRITISH 1870-1943) THE HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT Signed and dated 1899 lower left, oil on canvas (29.5cm x 44.5cm (11.75in x 17.5in)) Louis Grimshaw, son of acclaimed painter John Atkinson Grimshaw, was born in 1870. Louis trained under his father and for a spell the pair painted collaboratively, with John executing the sky and landscape and Louis working on the figures. Like his father, Louis generally painted nocturnes, but he diverged by predominantly representing London. Louis’ career as an artist was relatively brief, as he gave up painting in 1905 to work as a cartographer for the Manchester Guardian, and his paintings are consequently rare. Houses of Parliament was painted in 1899, and is a particularly fine example of Louis Grimshaw’s oeuvre. His father’s influence is clear in the muted palette, luscious atmosphere and accomplished handling of light. Despite electing to portray a quintessential London view, Grimshaw approaches the scene with remarkable insight and originality.

View of Bradford signed and dated, Louis H. Grimshaw 10/96' (lower left) oil on canvas 111/2 x 16 7/8 in. (29 x 43 cm.) PROVENANCE with Omell Galleries, London. Christie's, London, 10 February 1961, lot 107, (70 gns. to the present vendor). NOTES This is a view of the east end of the then parish church of St. Peter's Bradford. The church was made a Cathedral in 1919. The tower to the left of the picture is that of the Town Hall, which was built in imitation of the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence. Much of the foreground of the picture was re-developed in the twentieth century. We are grateful to Alex Robertson and Dr. Terry Friedman for their help in preparing this catalogue entry.

Greenwich signed and dated 'Louis H. Grimshaw 1897' (lower left) oil on panel 101/2 x 181/2 in. (26.7 x 47 cm.) PROVENANCE with Richard Green, London. NOTES Grimshaw portrays Greenwich at the point when evening subsides into night, and an eerie stillness envelopes the moonlit Thames. The distinctive towers of the Royal Naval Hospital can be seen to the left. The son of John Atkinson Grimshaw, Louis's work testifies to the influence of his father. The two had collaborated during the elder's latter years; John executing scenic backgrounds and Louis the figures. Many of Louis's paintings depict London; often commissioned direct by the art dealer Jackson, they include a series commemorating Edward VII's coronation. His output abated after 1905, when he became a cartographer for The Manchester Guardian, perhaps to surmount those debts incurred by his father. His work is comparatively rare as a result.

Scarborough sands signed and dated 'Louis Grimshaw 1898' (lower right) and further signed, inscribed and dated 'Scarborough/Louis Grimshaw/1898' (on the reverse) oil on board 71/2 x 123/4 in. (19 x 32.4 cm.) NOTES John Atkinson Grimshaw, Louis' father, rented a house near Scarborough which he called 'The Castle by the Sea,' around 1876. Both artists undertook several works in the surrounding area. The town is situated on two bays separated by a rocky headland, seen in this picture, which has a ruined Norman castle at the land-end. Scarborough has been one of the most popular resorts in north-east England for over three centuries. This is largely due to the discovery of 'healing' mineral springs in the area in 1620, as well as the natural beauty of its setting. It became a fashionable spa resort by the end of the eighteenth century and many novels were set there such as Smollett's Humphrey Clinker (1771) and Sheridan's A trip to Scarborough (1777). Louis inherited his father's artistic talent and was the most successful of his followers. After his death, Louis continued the tradition of painting moonlit views of Leeds, Liverpool and Edinburgh. In 1906 he stopped painting so that he could pursue a career as a cartographer on the Manchester Guardian. As a result his work is now rare and does not often appear on the market. We are grateful to Alexander Robertson, Curator, Leeds City Art Gallery, for his help in the preparation of this catalogue entry.
