Atkinson Grimshaw Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1836 - d. 1893

Artist John Grimshaw was born in Leeds, England in 1863. Upon turning 24 he quit his job at the Great Northern Railway to pursue the life of an artist. John Grimshaw is renowned for his nocturnal landscapes and cityscapes. His urban scenes earned his reputation and garnered praise from artists like James McNeill Whistler.

However, not all his colleagues approved of his technique. Several contemporaries were disdainful of his method of painting over a photographic image projected onto a blank canvas. Nevertheless, John Atkinson Grimshaw's artwork attracted many buyers during the Victorian era, and his ethereal urban tapestries continue to captivate modern art collectors in search of John Atkinson Grimshaw's paintings for sale. Provenance: Alexander Galleries, London, 1977; Private collection Exhibited: Alexander Galleries, London, 1976 John Atkinson Grimshaw was an English Victorian-era artist best known for his nocturnal scenes of urban landscapes He was called a "remarkable and imaginative painter" by the critic and historian Christopher Wood in Victorian Painting (1999). He was born on 6 September 1836 in a back-to-back house in Park Street, Leeds. In 1856 he married his cousin Frances Hubbard. In 1861, at the age of 24, to the dismay of his parents, he left his job as a clerk for the Great Northern Railway to become a painter.. He first exhibited in 1862, mostly paintings of birds, fruit, and blossom, under the patronage of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society. He and his wife moved in 1866 to a semi-detached villa, which is now numbered 56 Cliff Road in Headingley and has a Leeds Civic Trust blue plaque, and in 1870 to Knostrop Old Hall. He became successful in the 1870s and rented a second home, Castle-by-the-Sea in Scarborough. Scarborough became a favourite subject.

Docks scenes became one of the artists most recognisable subjects and reflect the importance of trade, empire, and industrialisation in Victorian Britian. Grimshaw turned to his subject matter in the mid-1870s, replacing his earlier Pre-Raphaelite landscapes with cityscapes painted in a Whistlerian manner. By 1885, he had moved from Leeds to London and lived and worked in Manresa Studios in Chelsea where he would have met Whistler, whose studio in Tite Street was nearby. He returned to Leeds in 1887, the year that the present picture was painted. By this time, he was represented by Agnew's, the leading art dealer of the period. His work frequently appeared in their stock books selling through their galleries in London, Manchester, and Liverpool or through their considerable connections in Glasgow. Glasgow provided more than half of Britain's shipping tonnage and a quarter of all locomotives worldwide in the 1870s, leading to it being named the Second City of the Empire. Most of Grimshaw's dock scenes have similar compositions, with a long central vista of the street, flanked on one side by shops and the other with masts and rigging. They are a masterclass in his ability to depict numerous light sources. The rich golden glow of the shop windows is reflected on the wet pavements and the figures walking by, while the soft moonlight silhouettes the ships at anchor. He repeated the same subjects on various sized canvases, the largest being to the same scale as the present picture. The most comparable example of Grimshaw's Glasgow Docks sold for £480,000, (Sale, Sotheby's London, 10th December 2014, lot 30.).

Robertson, Atkinson Grimshaw, Oxford, 1988, p.25-26, fig 16'His best work is characterised by a tender, poetic feeling: many of his canvases might well be described as poems in paint', wrote a critic at the artist's memorial exhibition in 1897. John Atkinson Grimshaw was largely self-taught and gave up his job as a railway clerk in 1861 to embark on a career as a full- time professional artist. `By 1864 he had adopted a Pre-Raphaelite style using precise handling to depict minute detail in a palette of vibrant colours that were often applied to a white ground. Like many young artists at mid-century, he was attracted to John Ruskin's notion of truth to nature as expounded in his influential book Modern Painters (1846-1860)' (A. Robertson, Pre-Raphaelite and Other Masters, The Andrew Lloyd Webber Collection, London, 2003, p.159). Twilight, The Vegetable Garden was painted in 1869 towards the end of his early Pre-Raphaelite period, the same year as one of his most celebrated early works Autumn Glory: The Old Mill (Leeds Art Gallery). Both works are rich in detail but have a more poetic atmosphere and show the artist's increasing interest in lighting effects and the golden glow of the setting sun.'Grimshaw frequently includes some element of toil both in his landscapes and townscapes, and hard work is made to seem part of an overall, natural social balance. Twilight [The Vegetable garden] is romantic because of the sense of repose which evening brings, yet it also contains a scene of labour- work in the fields, presented as part of the unchanging order. In Mary Barton Mrs Gaskell gives a townsman's view of the country: Here in their seasons may be seen the country business of haymaking, ploughing etc, which are such pleasant mysteries for townspeople to watch. This emphasis on mysteries reinforces the view that contemporaries felt alienated by their new industrial surroundings and by the disappearance of the rural way of life. Grimshaw was often to reflect on this sense of loss in his paintings.' (A. Robertson, Atkinson Grimshaw, 1988, p.25).

◆ JOHN ATKINSON GRIMSHAW (BRITISH 1836-1893) EVENING IN KNOSTROP Signed and dated 1881, oil on board (34cm x 44cm (13.5in x 17.25in)) Provenance: Thos Agnew & Sons Ltd, London, No.28603 John Atkinson Grimshaw’s innovation was to apply Ruskin’s tenet of ‘truth-to-nature’ to scenes of Britain’s burgeoning industrial centres. Owing to his sensitive portrayal of the atmosphere and ‘feeling’ of urban life, he has been considered the artistic equivalent of the great Victorian novelists Charles Dickens and Elizabeth Gaskell. Lyon & Turnbull are delighted to be offering two paintings by one of the most accomplished British artists of the nineteenth century. Atkinson Grimshaw was born in Leeds in 1836. By 1860 he had left his position as a Northern Railway clerk to become a full-time painter, much to his parents’ dismay. His early artworks were generally landscapes and still lifes of fruit, flowers and birds rendered with a detailed intensity inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites. He also worked from photography, a relatively new medium, and is believed to have implemented camera obscura projections onto his canvases to refine his compositions. His career breakthrough came in 1867 when a painting of Whitby harbour at night was received to great acclaim. The urban nocturne dominated Atkinson Grimshaw’s output forthwith, as he pursued ever-more subtle and complex ways to illuminate his compositions. Contemporary urban audiences identified with his nighttime streetscapes lit by gas lamps, which effectively evoked the dynamism and isolation of the industrialised town. Atkinson Grimshaw travelled to various towns and harbours to study their architecture and imbibe their atmosphere. The locales he most frequently painted (Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Whitby, Scarborough and London) reflect the distribution of his market. In the mid-nineteenth century innovative contemporary art was generally patronised by wealthy industrialists in the north of England and Scotland. Such was the case with the Pre-Raphaelites, whose aesthetic initially proved too challenging for traditional London tastes but flourished in northern industrial centres. Atkinson Grimshaw’s market developed along similar lines, and it was not until the 1870s that London collectors began to invest in his work in earnest. By 1870 he was successful enough to rent Knostrop Hall, a seventeenth-century mansion represented in Evening in Knostrop. The Hall was built for Adam Baynes (1622-1671), the first Member of Parliament for Leeds, and its Jacobean architecture would prove an enduring inspiration which Atkinson Grimshaw would continue to paint for the rest of his life. Evening in Knostrop depicts a solitary, fashionably-dressed figure waiting at the gate to the house. The shadowy landscape under the pale sky successfully evokes the ambience of Knostrop’s grounds in twilight. Between 1885 and 1887 Atkinson Grimshaw lived in Chelsea, London near the studio of the American artist James McNeill Whistler. The pair became good friends and bonded over their shared interest in painting city living, although Whistler implemented a more impressionistic technique. Whistler would later comment ‘I thought I had invented the nocturne, until I saw Grimmy’s moonlights’.

The pair became good friends and bonded over their shared interest in painting city living, although Whistler implemented a more impressionistic technique. Whistler would later comment ‘I thought I had invented the nocturne, until I saw Grimmy’s moonlights’. This Greenock scene exemplifies Atkinson Grimshaw’s mastery of ephemeral light. Greenock is situated on the River Clyde around 22 miles from Glasgow, and in the 18th and 19th centuries was a thriving and populous shipbuilding hub. Atkinson Grimshaw delineates the architecture with sharp precision, which serves as a visual counterpoint to the soft, delicate palette. While muted tones evoke the damp evening haze, points of tonal intensity draw the eye to the bustle of activity across the quayside, from the moored ships’ blinking lights, to the carriages conveying silhouetted figures, to the warm glow emanating from the row of smart shops. Greenock was painted a year before his untimely death from tuberculosis in 1893. Several of his children also became painters, including Louis Grimshaw, a son born in 1870. Louis trained under his father, and for a spell the pair painted collaboratively, with John executing the sky and landscape and Louis working on the figures. Like his father, Louis generally painted nocturnes, but he diverged by predominantly representing London. Louis’ career as an artist was relatively brief, as he gave up painting in 1905 to work as a cartographer for the Manchester Guardian, and his paintings are consequently rare.

Provenance: Wilson Barrett Collection, England Thence by descent Sold: Bonhams, Knightsbridge, March 20, 2018, Lot 79 Acquired at the above sale by the present owner Exhibited: Leeds, England, Leeds City Art Galleries, Atkinson Grimshaw 1836-1893, October 13 - November 10, 1979, no. 67 (also travelled to Southampton Art Gallery, November 24 - December 29, 1979 and Liverpool Walker Art Gallery, January 12 - February 9, 1980) Harrogate, England, The Mercer Art Gallery, Atkinson Grimshaw, Painter of Moonlight, April 16 - September 4, 2011 (also travelled to London, Guildhall Art Gallery, September 19, 2011 - January 15, 2012) Lot note: The present lot depicts a scene from Act II of Jane Shore. Written by W.G. Wills, the play was produced at the Leeds Amphitheatre in 1875 and 1876. The parts of Henry Shore and his errant wife Jane were played by Wilson Barrett and his wife Caroline Heath. The actress, as Jane Shore, is depicted in the painting on her return home after her affair with King Edward IV, only to find that her own child has perished in her absence. The Barretts were close friends of the Grimshaws, who introduced them to many other actors. The artist and his wife frequently entertained actors at their home in Leeds, Knostrop Hall. Around the mid-1870s, Grimshaw produced aesthetic interiors featuring fashionable women at home, similar to those of artists James Tissot and Lawrence Alma-Tadema. His work also appeared in London exhibitions at the Agnew's Bond Street gallery, which further enhanced his reputation. In 1878 Barrett became the actor manager of the newly opened Grand Theatre in Leeds. In a 1917 letter to her brother-in-law, the artist's daughter Enid stated that the room set from the play had been recreated in the Barretts' own home in Beech Grove, Leeds. However, it is not clear why Grimshaw painted it, with three of his own children recently dead from diphtheria. Perhaps the artist's new interest in depicting richly appointed and elegantly furnished rooms, as well as the commission from Barrett, was an attraction. Barrett had the painting hung at the Grand Theatre for many years. Grimshaw favored experimenting with different light sources in both landscapes and interiors. Here, Jane Shore is lit by moonlight streaming through the stained glass windows, while the firelight outlines the figure of her husband and the maid. As in other paintings by the artist, the central figure is over-life size; perhaps to emphasize her importance in the scene. The result is a mysterious scene within an interior redolent of comfort and home, very much as the Grimshaws themselves tried to create in their manorial setting at Knostrop.
