Painter, Illustrator, b. 1889 - d. 1960

Grigware grew up in Spokane, Washington, and moved to Chicago around 1911, where he became interested in advertising and commercial art. He painted naval subject matter during his time with the U.S. Navy in the 1930s and 40s, before moving from Chicago to Cody, Wyoming. He lived out the rest of his life there, painting the Western landscape.

        Edward T. Grigware (American, 1889-1960) Port Allen, Kauai Watercolor on paper 9" x 12 1/4"   Signed "Edward T. Grigware Lt. Comdr. USNR" to the bottom left, and titled in pencil to the bottom right. Grigware was a long-established and decorated artist who enlisted as a US Naval Reserve artist during World War II, creating posters and painting scenes from the Pacific front in support of the war effort. The glazed frame measures 21" x 25".

        Edward T. Grigware (American, 1889-1960)

        New England Summer Day, c. 1923; oil/canvas, 20" x 20", signed, dated; label on verso from unidentified venue with name, date, and title. Grigware began as a professional baseball player in Detroit, but then decided to pursue a career in art. He studied and exhibited extensively in Chicago in the 1920s-30s. He served as a Lt.. Commander under Nimitz in WWII, and later in his career, he founded a school for western art in Wyoming. This is an excellent, early work.

He also exhibited at the Hoosier Salon in 1925, and the Art Institute of Chicago in 1917. Grigware was a professional baseball player in Detroit in 1910, but decided to pursue a career in the arts.
