Marcos Grigorian Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1925 - d. 2007

Marcos Grigorian, but also known as Marco Grigorian (December 5, 1925 – August 27, 2007) was an Iranian-Armenian and American artist and gallery owner, he was a pioneer of Iranian modern art.

Early life and education: Grigorian was born in Kropotkin, Krasnodar Krai, Russia, to an Armenian family from Kars who had fled that city to escape massacres when it was captured by Turkey in 1920.[citation needed] In 1930 the family moved from Kropotkin to Iran, living first in Tabriz, and then in Tehran. The Apadana gallery in Tehran opened in 1949, and began showing his work.

After finishing his primary education in Iran, in 1950 he studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome. Graduating from there in 1954, he returned to Iran, opened the Galerie Esthétique, an important commercial gallery in Tehran.[citation needed] In 1958, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture, he organized the first Tehran Biennial.[citation needed] Grigorian was also an influential teacher at the Fine Arts Academy, where he disseminated his enthusiasm for local popular culture, including coffee-house paintings, a type of folk art named after the locations in which they were often displayed.

In the 1950s he acted in a few Iranian films, under the name "Marc Gregory".

Career: He lived in the 1960s in the United States first moving in 1962 to New York City, and then moved to Minneapolis to work at Minnetonka Center for the Arts. In Minneapolis he started Universal Galleries which became an influential center for Iranian art in Minneapolis, and it existed at the same time along with a quickly growing Modern Iranian art collection that could be found at Abby Weed Grey's home. In 1975, Grey donated her collection to form New York University's art museum, the Grey Art Gallery.

In 1975, Grigorian helped organize the Group of Free Painters and Sculptors in Tehran and was a founder member. Other founding artists included Gholamhossein Nami, Massoud Arabshahi, Morteza Momayez, Mir Abdolrez Daryabeigi, and Faramarz Pilaram.[citation needed]

Grigorian was an early artist with earthworks and land art in Iran.

Grigorian eventually moved to Yerevan, Armenia (which was then still a republic of the Soviet Union).[when?] In 1989, he traveled to Russia at the invitation of the Union of Russian Artists, visiting Moscow and Leningrad.[citation needed]

He exhibited his clay and straw works in Yerevan in 1991. He later donated 5,000 of his artworks to the government of Armenia. In 1993 he founded the "Museum of the Middle East" in Yerevan: 2,600 exhibits are on display, with most of them coming from his own collection.

Some of his works are now on display at various museums including the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City, Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met) in New York City, Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Contemporary Art in Kerman, Near East Art Museum in Yerevan, and the National Gallery of Armenia.[citation needed]

Death: On 4 August 2007 Grigorian was assaulted and beaten about the head by two masked robbers who had broken into his Yerevan home. It was speculated that the robbers believed, erroneously, that there was a large sum of money in the house, proceeds from the sale of Grigorian's summer residence in Garni. After an anonymous phone call to police, Grigorian was discovered injured and taken to hospital. He died of a suspected heart attack on 27 August 2007, a day after leaving the hospital.

Personal life: Marcos was married in 1955 to Flora Adamian, the marriage ended in divorced by 1960. Marcos and Flora's daughter, Sabrina Grigorian (1956-1986), was an actress.

Attributed to Marcos Grigorian (1925-2007) Abstract, circa 1950s Oil on Masonite Appears unsigned; with the artist's inscription and ink stamps, verso 57" H x 5.5"-7.25" W Provenance: The artist Private Collection, Los Angeles, CA, acquired from the above, circa 1960 Notes: The abstract painting created by Marcos Grigorian was created around the 1950s, when he returned to his hometown of Tehran, Iran. The current piece, oil on canvas, is an impressive piece by Grigorian that runs long and vertically. This work represents Grigorian as a pioneer of modern art in Iran and a vision he brought to the creative landscape (Daftari, 3). Grigorian also strived for the authenticity of his works because his "own trajectory reflects the search for an expression that is modern but not borrowed." (Daftari, 3). Grigorian reflected his originality in the works that he created, which was a product of his education and his profound use of expressionism in his pieces. Examining the color scheme of the paint is quite limited, but in this case, the small variety of colors for this work does not diminish the stunning look of the painting. The paint used in the background is oak-colored paint, accompanied by black paint that is lightly marked onto the panel. The color palette that Grigorian is applying is earthy tones, which calls back to the influence of his experimentation with earth art, using natural hues. The piece is balanced by a long vertical black paint stroke that runs from the top and bottom of the canvas. Along this vertical line, many horizontal lines protrude from each side of the black vertical line at various lengths. When looking at these lines, it resembles what looks like a spine with spindles, Giving this panel a naturalistic form. Examining this piece, the subdued earthy tones, the swift brush of the artist, and the balance created along the piece to create a spindle-like shape are the prominent artistic elements of Grigorian. The current piece is a testament to Grigorian's well-developed artistic style. A wonderful homage to the human condition and its connection to nature. Grigorian also "harnessed his metaphysical visions to the structured geometry he had absorbed from Minimalism, but he did not shy away from other aesthetic poles" (Daftari, 3). Grigorian's experience in creating works with different mediums and styles is vital to developing his original abstract works. Although Grigorian and his influence on the art world and, more importantly, on "the Iranian identity in art is often equated with certain expressions, such as calligraphy and miniature painting, Grigorian opens doors to an art that is global without derivative and local without being reductively ethnic," (Daftari, 3).

    Est: $30,000 - $40,000

Marcos Grigorian (1925-2007) Untitled abstract, 1956 Oil on canvas Signed and dated upper left: Grigorian; signed and dated again, and with the artist's inscription and ink stamps, verso 31" H x 23" W Provenance: The artist Private Collection, Los Angeles, CA, acquired from the above, circa 1960 Notes: Marcos Grigorian was born in Kropotkin, Russia, in 1925 to an Armenian family. Grigorian's family escaped from Kars to avoid the massacres due to Kars' capture by Turkey in 1920. In 1930 Grigorian and his family moved to Tehran. Grigorian was notable for being an artist, teacher, collector, and gallerist. In 1950, Grigorian studied at the Accademia de Belle Arti in Rome and studied with Roberto Melli, who was a cubist sculptor (Noorani, n.d.). Upon graduating in 1954, Grigorian moved back to Tehran, where he opened a commercial gallery. Thus, becoming a prominent teacher at the Fine Arts Academy, where Grigorian taught students about folk art. Continuing, in Tehran, he was placed as the "head of the graphic department at the Ministry of Culture and Art. While there, he introduced new etching techniques to students" (Abramian, p.80, as cited in Fouladvand). A group of free painters and sculptures in Tehran was organized and founded by Marcos Grigorian. As a multifaceted artist, Grigorian executed pieces of modernist pop art and experimented with Earth art to symbolize the connection between humans and the nature surrounding us. In 1977, Grigorian left Iran and moved to Yerevan, Armenia, and there he showed his clay and straw work in 1991, further proving his accomplished versatility when practicing various mediums. Grigorian introduced Iranians to contemporary and unique art as a worldly artist. Marcos's expression as an artist was a combination of skillful drawing techniques, themes of immigration, ethnic textures, modernism, pop art, local textures, experimentation, and abstract elements. The current painting is an abstract piece with an earthy color palette, which confirms the influence of Grigorian's experimentation with "earth art." A minimalist range of colors of red, black, grey, and brown shades is beautifully used to draw the viewers' attention. The mixture of brown and grey paint in the background is painted with inconsistent and quick brush strokes to create a textured and layered setting, an important artistic element of Grigorian. There is much action in the painting itself, the red paint that runs vertically with the swift stroke of the brush. However, running horizontally from the first red color, many small brushstrokes run down the vertical line of various inconsistent lengths. Each line looks to have slow beaded drips starting to occur, as an illusion that the paint is still drying. To the right of the red vertical paint stroke is a black vertical brush mark; each mark looks similar. However, the viewer can see the lines from the brush while using the black paint; they look more like swift and uncontrolled strokes. Just like the left side of the painting, there are also horizontal lines running on the right side, but they are just in black paint. With no clear form or figure, it is a testament to Grigorian's exploration of abstract elements. Marcos Grigorian was a prominent figure in the art world who was influential in introducing many Iranians to contemporary art, combining folk art, and reawakening the local ethnic elements. Grigorian did not only leave his mark in Iran, but his impact spanned multiple countries. This abstract painting stands for Grigorian's experience in creating earth art; abstraction, texture, conceptual arrangement, and building swift brush mark management are all visual components that make this a fascinating piece. Those who view this piece are witnesses to a unique painting filled with elements of experimental treatments of the surface he created that were so influential to twentieth-century visual culture.
