The Welsh photo journalist Philip Jones Griffiths became known chiefly for his unsparing documentation of the Vietnam War. His main work, Vietnam Inc., published as a book in 1971, is one of the classics of photo journalism. Griffiths, who embarked upon his first of many trips to Vietnam in 1966 at the behest of Magnum, felt a profound connection with the country and its inhabitants which was to last his entire lifetime. The first three years at his new post, however, were marked by misery, war and scenes of atrocity. Griffiths captured these on film, attracting international attention. The unadorned view of war situations and especially the documentation of the victims' suffering sparked extensive discussions. His images show mainly the effects of combat on the civilian population, especially women and children, with US soldiers among them seeming overwhelmed and perplexed. The present photograph shows a woman in traditional dress working in a paddy field. Her gaze is trained on three American soldiers moving towards her. Here, Griffiths, the president of Magnum for many years, once again proved his instinct for contrasts and opposites. The persons in the picture are not only of different gender, social status and dress, but they also represent opposite sides in a military occupation scenario.
