Louis Oscar Griffith Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Etcher, b. 1875 - d. 1956

Louis Oscar Griffith (1875–1956) was an American painter known for his paintings, etchings, and aquatints of landscapes, especially of scenes in Brown County, Indiana, and Texas. He was born in Newcastle, Indiana, in 1875 but five years later moved with his family to Dallas, Texas, where, in his teens, he took art lessons in landscape artist's Frank Reaugh's studio and traveled with Reaugh and other students on sketching exhibitions in West Texas. He then studied at the St. Louis School and Museum of Fine Arts before moving to Chicago in the mid-1890s to study at the Art Institute and work as a commercial artist. After a one-year New York interlude in 1902-03, he returned to Chicago.

Working as an illustrator at Barnes-Crosby Engraving in Chicago, he became interested in etching. In 1908, he traveled in France and England, painting, making sketches for prints and honing his printmaking skills. One of his Brittany paintings—"The River Aven"— was part of the Art Institute's thirteenth annual exhibition of Chicago artists and appeared in the Chicago Journal (February 2, 1909). Griffith had joined the Palette and Chisel Club, which took sketching trips in the outdoors, and, at the suggestion of one of its members in 1907 had visited Brown County, Indiana. That visit began decades of painting and sketching those wooded hills. Eventually, in 1922, Griffith moved to Brown County with his wife (he married Carolyn Maulsby in 1920).

During the cold Hoosier winters between 1926 and 1930, Griffith made return trips to Texas, where he had sketched his earliest landscapes under the guidance of Frank Reaugh. When Griffith's Texas landscapes were featured in a 2010 exhibit at the Tyler Museum of Art in Tyler, Texas, TMA's director, Kimberley Tomio, called the exhibition "the first exposure that scholars and collectors of early Texas art as well as the general public will have to view this powerful and beautiful body of work,” said Kimberley Tomio, TMA Director.

Louis Oscar Griffith (American, 1875-1956, active Louisiana, 1916-1917), "French Market", watercolor and graphite on paper, signed lower left, partial landscape en verso, "The Rowley Gallery Frame Makers, 140 Church Street, Kensington" label on reverse of frame, 22 1/8 in. x 28 in., framed, overall 29 1/4 in. x 35 in. x 1 1/2 in. Provenance: Eckert & Ross Fine Art, Indianapolis, IN. Note: Throughout his career, Louis Oscar Griffith displayed a love of plein-air painting and travel. He spent the winter of 1916 to 1917 in New Orleans with fellow artist Robert Grafton, and the two found much inspiration in the architecture, waterways and people of the city. Griffith’s rare depictions of New Orleans, both prints and original works, have become among his most prized. The watercolor offered here of the French Market shows the artist’s dedication to capturing scenes of daily life and his skill with the medium. The use of bright colors, loose brushstrokes and compositional cropping perfectly encapsulate the dynamism and vibrancy of the market – traits that obviously drew the artist’s keen eye to the otherwise common scene of a fruit and vegetable vendor.

Louis Oscar (L.O.) Griffith (1875-1956) 13" x 18" oil on board, Louisiana Lowlands (near New Orleans), signed lower left. Recently conserved. The following biography is from the fineestateart.com website: Born in 1875 in Greencastle, IN, Louis Oscar Griffith lived in Nashville, IN the last thirty years of his life, after spending many years in Texas (childhood), St. Louis (art school) and Chicago (career). While growing up in Texas he was taken under the wing of well-known artist Frank Reaugh. Even taking a trip through the Southwest by covered wagon, painting as they traveled. ‘L.O.’, or ‘Griff’ was a successful commercial artist in Chicago by the late 1910s. He married Carolyn Maulsby in 1920 and two years brought a career change. As the story goes, Griffith sent off a just-completed ham illustration to a meat-packing firm. The company’s art director sent it back with the notation “Make ham more graceful.” That apparently tipped the scale and sent him, his wife and young son packing for Nashville, IN, county seat of beautiful Brown County, which they had been visiting for years. A man of strict scheduling and precision, he rose at 6:00 am everyday, and painted in his studio and a slow and methodical pace, often from sketches he earlier had made in the field. His etchings in particular were works of perfectionism, whether in black and white or in multi-layers of color. Griffith was known for his subtle tonalities of his aquatints, and won many awards. He was also a regular exhibitor in Brown County and the Hoosier Salon. The Griffiths were also good friends with fellow artists and neighbors Adolph and Alberta Schultz and the Vawters. Louis Oscar Griffith died in 1956 in Franklin, Indiana at age 81. You can see the bio on our site https://fineestateart.com/artists/louis_oscar_l_o_griffith

"Spring at Home" 10" x 8" colored etching, signed lower right. To see this biography on our site, visit: https://fineestateart.com/artists/louis_oscar_l_o_griffith
