      Joseph E. Grey II (b. 1927) Untitled (Self Portrait), 1954 oil on canvas signed and dated 22 x 27 inches framed Joseph Grey II was born in 1927 and raised in Plain City, a rural community in Ohio. He initially studied music at Ohio State University.  Eventually, he chose to pursue visual art and enrolled in the commercial art department at the Columbus College of Art and Design, 1948.  He worked for an advertising agency in Columbus and then moved to New York City, where he was mostly doing freelance work at first, moving on to full time work at Hockaday and McCann Erickson.  He developed advertisements and graphic design for RCA, Elizabeth Arden, Noxema, Esso, General Motors, and Cover Girl.     As a fine artist, he specialized in colorful, severely cubist compositions.  Most recently, the Musekegon Museum of Art, MI held an exhibition of his work entitled, Ad Man: Joseph Grey II (2018-2019).  His work is illustrated in the book, American Negro Art, Cedric Dover, 1960, plate 88.

      JOSEPH E. GREY II (1927 - ) Untitled. Oil on canvas, 1950. 560x686 mm; 22x27 inches. Signed in oil, lower right recto. Signed and dated in oil, upper left verso. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection. This early modernist oil is the first painting by this overlooked artist to come to auction. Raised in rural Ohio, Grey earned a masters degree from the Columbus College of Art and Design. His career as a painter peaked in 1958 when he won the prestigious Emily Lowe painting competition in New York, the year after Hughie Lee-Smith. His 1958 watercolor Bull and Fighter is illustrated in Cedric Dover's American Negro Art. Grey then went on to pursue a career in advertising, and was an award-winning art director for over 40 years. Grey's watercolors have also been shown extensively with the National Watercolor Society.
