"Schimmel in een stal" ("A Gray Horse in a Stable") oil on wood panel, 1668. Published in "Catalogue des objets d'art au palais de San Donato le 15 mars 1880" by Anatolii Niukolaevich Demidov, 1880. Beneath image in plate is inscribed "Philip Wouwerman Pinx. / Le Cheval Blanc / Greux S.C." A fine etching by French engraver Gustave Marie Greux after a painting from 1668 by Dutch artist Phillips Wouwerman. The dramatic composition features a white horse facing left with one hoof raised as his reins are tied to a column. The handsome steed wears a saddle, while is lush tail flows behind, all placed dramatically against a dark background. The first: The Poacher Poacher Cleaning His Gun after the original oil painting by Jean Alphonse Roehn (1799-1864); engraved by Gustave Greux ( French, 1838-1919); signed in the plate lower right and left. Jean Alphonse Roehn (1799-1864) was a French artist, master of genre painting, portrait painter, caricaturist, engraver, teacher. The second: Two cattle drinking from a pond near a fence in the foreground at left; cottages on the bank in the middle ground, hills in background; illustration to The Portfolio of 1873; circa 1873; print made by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894), a British artist, art critic, and author. He was a keen advocate of contemporary printmaking and most of his writings concern the graphic arts. He was an important theorist of the English Etching Revival; signed in the plate lower left. In 1871 he received a third class medal for two plates etched for " Works of Art in England." At the Salon of 1873 he was awarded a second class medal, and in the same year received a medal at the Universal Exposition at Vienna, which reward was repeated the following year at the London Universal Exposition. His exhibit at the Salon of 1876 placed him Hors Concours. At the Universal Exposition at Paris in 1878 and 1889 he received an Honorable Mention and a medal, respectively.           Gustave Greux (1838-1919) French artist. He studied painting under M. Gleyre, Torny R. Fleury, Cheret and Charles de Touruemine, and made himself known to the public at the Salon of 1859, where he exhibited a Still Life, which afterwards was awarded a medal at Besancon in 1860. His knowledge of etching was acquired in the studios of Leopold Flameng and Leon Gaucherel. At the Salon of 1861 he made his first exhibit of etching. In 1871 he received a third class medal for two plates etched for " Works of Art in England." At the Salon of 1873 he was awarded a second class medal, and in the same year received a medal at the Universal Exposition at Vienna, which reward was repeated the following year at the London Universal Exposition. His exhibit at the Salon of 1876 placed him Hors Concours. At the Universal Exposition at Paris in 1878 and 1889 he received an Honorable Mention and a medal, respectively.
