Martin Grelle (b. 1954) Trinkets oil on canvas 30 x 48 inches 39 x 57 inches (frame) signed lower right: Martin Grelle verso: titled on stretcher Martin Grelle, born and raised in Clifton, Texas, found his artistic passion in capturing the beauty of his hometown’s landscapes and people. Influenced by local life and mentored by one of the Cowboy Artists of America, James Boren, Grelle began painting as a teenager, expanding from depictions of Scandinavian settlers to broader Western themes. Joining the Cowboy Artists of America in 1995, he explores diverse landscapes across the U.S. and Europe, drawn particularly to mountains for their grandeur. Using primarily oils with a focus on color and texture, Grelle evokes dramatic light and shadow in his work, increasingly delving into historical narratives to tell visual stories. Commenting on Trinkets, Grelle notes that, “It was done for a show at Overland Gallery, and I believe it was either late 1980’s or early 1990’s. I do remember that it was a significant painting for me…one of my first attempts at painting more Northern plains oriented Native American subjects, rather than the Taos, Acoma, and other Southwestern oriented subjects I had previously done.”

    Est: $40,000 - $60,000

Martin Grelle (American, b. 1954) A Refuge from the Cold, 1991 oil on canvas signed Martin Grelle and dated (lower right); signed and titled (verso) 36 x 60 inches Property from a Private Collection, Chicago, Illinois Provenance: Sold: Altermann Galleries & Auctioneers, Santa Fe, New Mexico, November 13, 2011, Lot 218 Light on the snow, the shadows cast, the trackways with bright edges and dark ruts. Your eye first falls there, away from the subject and center of Martin Grelle's A Refuge From the Cold. Grelle paints with a sure hand, knowing that while you may start with the snow and tracks, your eye will rise to the horses and cowboys, and to the welcoming warmth of the cabin, with its snug fire sending smoke up the chimney. This is what makes Grelle one of the principal contemporary interpreters of the American West. Your eye, focusing on the foreground, reminds you of where these man and horses have been - out in the elements on cold winter's day - and sets you up to appreciate where they have arrived, at home and hearth. - James D. Balestrieri

Martin Grelle (Texas, born 1954) large signed original oil painting on canvas. Measures 30 x 48 inches image size and 39.5 x 57.5 inches framed. The original oil painting is in excellent condition with no issues, the frame has a few small nicks. Weighs approximately 40 pounds. Provenance: Estate of David Milot. David was a Real Estate Broker by trade and a passionate, lifelong collector of anything of quality that caught his eye. His collection of fine art, bronzes, designer decor, period furniture, mid-century furniture, designer furniture, Chinese antiques and more are among some of the finest examples available. David's knowledge, or perhaps more accurately, "his eye" for quality, was usually the most refined of anyone in the room. David purchased thousands of items over the years at auctions, estate sales, and antique stores so any additional provenance is not readily available. These treasures were truly found "in the wild," and that's how David liked it. This item must be picked up by buyer or requires the use of an outside shipper. Martin Grelle (American, b. 1954) Spring Showers, 1987 Oil on canvas 20 x 30 inches (50.8 x 76.2 cm) Signed and dated lower right: Martin Grelle / 1987 Signed, dated, titled, and inscribed on the stretcher bar: "Spring Showers" oil All reproduction right are held by the artist and his heirs / Martin Grelle / 1987 PROVENANCE: Texas Art Gallery, Dallas. Private collection, Dallas, acquired from the above, April 28, 1987. Born and raised in Clifton, Texas, Martin Grelle was inspired by the immense beauty of his homeland, capturing this love of the landscape in his paintings. His natural artistic talent was nurtured at an early age by two of the true luminaries of Texas art, James Boren and Melvin Warren. Both men were influential members of the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America (CAA) and had established their studios in Clifton, Texas, when Grelle was in high school. They took an interest in Grelle's talent and became his artistic mentors, sharing with him their knowledge of western art and history. Grelle became a member of the CAA in 1995 and is now one of the most accomplished and highly collected artists of the American West. He is one of only five artists to be twice awarded the Prix de West honor from the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. Spring Showers is an atmospheric work that beautifully depicts springtime in Texas with a rider and his steeds on a quiet afternoon after a storm has passed. From the detailed stonework on the house to the rain-kissed petals of the bluebonnets, Grelle's sensitivity to textural qualities is brilliantly displayed in this glistening vision of the land he loved so much. This work not only demonstrates his skill as a figure painter, but also exhibits the ideal formula for achieving a flawless landscape: cumulus clouds, bluebonnets, oak trees, rainy reflections, and a cohesive, peaceful unity between man and nature. The rider's yellow rain jacket complements and enhances the vibrancy of the classic Texas bluebonnets creating a sense of hope born out of an earlier gray day. Perhaps the moral of the story is that with every passing storm comes new growth and fresh air, an ideal that paralleled the vision of the American West. The original invoice from the Texas Art Gallery dated April 28, 1987 accompanies this lot. HID01801242017
