"The day I landed in the Midwest in May of 1970, I was very impressed. I looked around and was astounded by the clarity of the land its big, flat sweep (Harold Gregor: Painting Landscapes. Holly Davis, October 2014) Harold Gregor is an American landscape artist who paints his home region of Illinois. His entire oeuvre can be grouped into five chapters: Illinois Flatscapes, Illinois Landscapes, Illinois Colorscapes, Trail Series and Left-Right Vibrascapes. These landscapes are primarily traditional rectangular formats, with ratios of 5:5 or 3:5, which he also calls window-spaces". From the beginning of the 1980s, Harold Gregor began to create paintings with panoramic formats, with ratios of 1:5. The flat meadow and field landscapes of Illinois, sometimes with oak and maple trees, extend as far as the eye can see. Recorded by very few artists, these meadows and fields have become a characteristic feature of Harold Gregors art. He seeks to avoid any kind of sentimentality in his landscapes, and instead focuses strictly on the details of the scene depicted; blades of grass and ears of corn sustain a great deal of his attention. Harold Gregor is professor at the Illinois State University as well as guest professor at further art schools in the United States. Harold Gregor arbeitet als Professor an der Illinois State University sowie als Gastprofessor an weiteren Kunsthochschulen der Vereinigten Staaten. Seine Werke sind in zahlreichen Galerien und in den meisten musealen sowie staatlichen Institutionen der USA vertreten.

In 1973 he began combining photography and abstraction to create his ‘flat landscapes’, a mixture of realistic depiction of color with abstract handling of color. For him, painting is an exploration of color relationships, and colors are a balancing act. He uses mixed or pure color to create light and shadow, and applies them with several layers. Condition: The canvas shows pressure marks from the stretcher, craquelure and minor finger marks. The frame is in good condition. Harold Gregor (b.1929) Born in Detroit, Harold Gregor studied at Wayne State University, at Michigan State University and at Ohio State University. He is now Professor Emeritus of Illinois State University. Gregory became known in the 1970s with his realistic and photorealistic landscapes of the Midwest. Often, his landscapes are presented from above, showing a typical, reduced range of colors and a flat image effect. Beginning in 1995. Gregory went over to more intensely colored, abstract representations of a local hiking trail (‘trail paintings’) and later to fantasy landscapes. Works by Gregory are in important collections in the US and in Europe, including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Denver Art Museum, and the Citibank Corporation, New York.
