      Edward Frederick Green (1767-1851) Portrait of Matilda Mary Graham (1815-1847), half length, wearing Abyssinian costume Signed and dated 1834, inscribed verso, oil on canvas, 91cm by 71cm Provenance: Dorothy Dixon Estate (descendent of Wordsworth) sale at Alfred Mossop & Co, Ambleside Lot 116 9th, April 1970 Matilda (1815-1847) was one of nine of Reginald Grahame and Louise Susannah Dennison's children. There are references to her in numerous letters from the Wordsworth family including one dated 7th May 1831 from Woodford to her being there with her fianc┌ James Moring Green who later became Consul at Athens. The artist EF Green travelled extensively and exhibited a series of paintings of Greek Subjects at the British Institution and the Society of British Art 1834-35 and there are references to him visiting Abyssinia, the national dress which Matilda appears to be wearing.
