            Nov. 27, 2024

Derrick Greaves,  The Model Resting, 1974-5

            Est: £4,000 - £6,000

Derrick Greaves,  British 1927-2022 -  The Model Resting, 1974-5;  acrylic on canvas, signed, titled and dated on the reverse 'Derrick Greaves The Model Resting 1974/5', 116 x 142.8 cm (ARR)  Provenance:  Erhard Stern (known as Edward) and thence by descent  Note:  the present work was made at an important time for the artist, following his acclaimed exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1973 and commercial exhibitions at Monica Kinley Gallery in London in 1973 and 1975. In an article by Mark Glazebrook (director of the Whitechapel 1969-72) written in 1967 he compared Greaves's work to Patrick Caulfield, Roy Lichenstein and Fernard Leger, emphasising the impact of Pop art on his work and in particularly the clarity of the work, avoiding any sense of expressive brushstroke. Other works from the era also focus on the female figure, such as 'Red Odalisque, 1972' and 'Nude (Grey Blanket), 1977'. Greaves's cool approach in these works offers an interesting subversion of the traditions of desire and eroticism in Western painting.

From 1948-52 he studied at the Royal College of Art and went on to teach part-time at St Martins School of Art in London and the Royal Academy Schools. During this time he won the John Moores Painting prize, and exhibited internationally. Greaves, a highly eminent figure in the Mod-Brit art scene, initially gained acclaim in the 1950s, when he represented Britain at the Venice Biennale along with the other ÔKitchen-SinkÕ painters: Bratby, Middleditch and Smith, his work swiftly developed into a more heraldic style that paralleled 1960s Pop Art.
