      Antique engraving “The life of Buckingham” by William Greatbach, 1865 A. L. Egg, R.A. pinxt.", "W. Greatbach, sculpt. Size: 18 x 24 cm. (7 x 9.4 inches) Size with fields: 25 x 33 cm. (9.8 x 12.9 inches) Condition: some foxing and mold stains mainly to the fields. Interior with a dinner, where George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham, sitting at the centre of the table, some guests standing and toasting for the duke, others sitting and chatting, the moon and stars in the sky through the window on the back wall flanked by mirrors; after Egg's picture then in the collection of James Dugdale, Wroxall Abbey; illustration to the Art Journal of 1865. William Greatbach (1802-1885), Engraver and illustrator William Greatbach had a long career as a portrait and figure engraver, working, in particular, for the annuals that became popular from the 1820s onwards. He was first published in James's Naval History (1822) and went on to contribute to The Amulet (1828, 1831), The Anniversary (1829), S.G. Hall's Book of Gems (1836), Finden's Royal Gallery of British Art (1841), and Hall's Gems of European Art (1846). From 1849, he engraved regularly for The Art Journal, mostly rendering genre subjects by contemporary painters.
