CONTACT US SKU#: 117824 US Shipping $75 + insurance. BIOGRAPHY: The Canadian Una Gray was a student at the Victoria School of Art and Design in Nova Scotia, Canada. She also studied at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts. Beginning circa 1910, there was an artist with this name residing in Boston, at 319 Marlboro Street. This artist was frequently mentioned in Boston area newspaper articles of the time and it is known that she exhibited in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania. Once again, any documented connection to California is lacking.Although a birth year of 1873 for an artist with the name “Una Gray” has been widely used in various reference guides, a death year of 1930 has been cited less frequently and in some instances information concerning a death date has been left blank. Also, the year 1930 has been suggested as the year the artist came to, or possibly returned to California. Perhaps there were two separate artists painting under the same name. Alternatively, one artist may have created all of the paintings included here.The public exhibitions noted for Una Gray include the: Concord Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, Massachusetts, 1916; Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, 1918; and numerous local exhibitions in the Boston area. The image of the women braiding their hair, presented here, is listed in the permanent collection of the Reading Public Museum, Reading, Pennsylvania. Una Gray is also represented in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Canada. However, many of the public works attributed to Una Gray are unsigned and accreditation is based on correspondence and dated bill of sales. A drawing, which appears to have been swiftly signed “Una”, in the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, is inconclusive. It is our hope that with the data and images presented here that a more conclusive identification will be possible.
