ARTIST: H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 38 1/4 x 54 3/4 in./97.2 x 139 cm PRINTER: Imp. Courmont Frères, Paris DESCRIPTION: In the Belle Epoque, it was rare enough for a young woman to smoke, let alone roll her own, which is why cigarette paper companies of the period subtly encouraged women to take up the habit. This is one of Gray’s finest posters, with a wealth of decorative detail not usually found in his images. And although the central medallion recalls Mucha, Gray poses his model far more seductively than Mucha’s famous poster for Job cigarette papers done the same year. A prolific caricaturist and illustrator who worked for a half-dozen Paris periodicals, Gray also designed posters for music halls and other clients using several different styles. ARTIST: H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 46 3/8 x 62 1/2 in./118 x 158.7 cm PRINTER: Imp. E. Bougard, Paris DESCRIPTION: Does this clever girl have super-strength? No, it's just the ingenious design of the Rudge-Whitworth cycle, the "lightest and most durable" cycle on the market, according to one of their press pamphlets. Here, H. Gray continues a long visual narrative for Whitworth Cycles initiated by Pal and others—a story of flirtation and competition between the genders, which plays out along the same stretch of brick wall. In a previous iteration (see PAI-LXXIII, 1) a dapper hipster gentleman amazes a host of female admirers with a similar trick of strength and balance. H. Gray's contribution, after the merger of the Rudge and Whitworth companies, seizes on the bicycle's role in advancing women's freedoms, and creates a deft illustration of the new generation—for both women and bicycles—as the 20th century rides out from the 19th. ARTIST: H. GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 38 1/4 x 55 3/8 in./97.4 x 141.7 cm PRINTER: Papiers-Monnaie, Paris DESCRIPTION: Bikes seem to have brought out the most vivid imagination in posterists of the Belle Epoque, and this is a fine example of it: an angel, brilliantly lit by the rays emanating from the brand name, frolicking with the bicycle’s wheel in deep blue space. Gray started out as an illustrator and caricaturist; his work for such magazines as Le Boulevardier, Le Boudoir and Paris Illustré was signed with the nom-de-plume "Grivois.” His diverse output also included menus, catalogues, and costumes for the famous Paris music halls. He naturally joined in the poster mania of the 1890s under yet a new name, Gray. Some of his most imaginative—and indeed otherworldly—works were for bicycles. (Art Nouveau; Bicycles)

GRAY (Henri Boulanger, 1858-1924) SIZE: 37 3/4 x 50 1/8 in./96 x 127.2 cm PRINTER: Affiches Camis, Paris DESCRIPTION: Masked balls had been held at the old Paris Opera House since the 1850s. By the end of the 19th century, up to four "grands bals masqués" per season (January to March) were held at the (new) Théâtre de l'Opéra. Gray created several designs for the events, and here presents a different perspective of the grand foyer of the Opera Garnier; a delightful Joker waves the wand for the third Bal Masqué of 1899.
