BIOGRAPHY: George Edward Kruger Gray (Grey was an English artist, best remembered for his designs of coinage and stained glass windows.He got his tertiary education at the Bath School of Art, today Bath School of Art and Design a department of the Bath Spa University. There he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art* in London. Here he graduated with the Diploma in Design in his birth name George Edward Kruger.During the First World War George Kruger Grey served with the Artists Rifles, and a camouflage* unit of the Royal Engineers. Here he was hiding military items, and made dummy objects to irritate the enemy forces.In 1918, after George's marriage to Frances Audrey Gordon Grey, he changed his name to George Kruger Grey.After the war he carried on with his career of an artist. 1923 he exhibited his numismatic works at the Royal Academy of Arts. He won a great reputation, and orders to design the Royal coinage for Great Britain.George Kruger Gray was not specialized to the design of numismatic items. He also designed and made led-glass windows for churches, universities etc., illustrated books and made posters, and cartoons.In 1938 he became a Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE)George Edward Kruger Grey died in Chichester, West Sussex, England on 2 May 1943.

            A stained glass panel,by George Kruger Gray (1880-1943), of shield shape, depicting the arms of the Merchant Taylors' Company,30 x 23.5cm,together with a collection of forty-five designs for a suite of stained glass for the Merchant Taylors' Hall, Threadneedle Street, London, approx 75 x 61cm The original windows of 1837 were found to be beyond repair so Kruger Gray was drafted in to design the heraldic details of the new suite, under the direction of Robert Anning Bell. Lowndes & Drury undertook the work and it was completed in 1932, but destroyed in the Blitz in 1940.

            George Kruger Gray (1880-1943)George Kruger was born in St. Helier, Jersey, his family moving to Liverpool when he was five years old. After studying at Merchant Taylors' School, Crosby and the Bath School of Art, he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. He served in the Artists' Rifles during the First World War and the camouflage unit of the Royal Engineers. On his marriage to Frances Audrey Gordon Gray in 1918, he adopted his wife's surname and became known as George Kruger Gray. Signing his work 'KG' and sometimes using a krug (the German word for a jug), he was well known as a prolific designer of coins, mostly of the heraldic designs on the reverse. His designs were used on currency in New Zealand, Australia, Rhodesia, Mauritius and Canada.In 1922, he lived at No. 5, St. Paul's Studios, Talgarth Road, London, one of several dwellings purposely built for artists to work in - other well known inhabitants include Sir Edward Burne-Jones, William Logsdail and, more
