Alasdair Gray Sold at Auction Prices

Painter, b. 1934 - d. 2019

Alasdair James Gray (28 December 1934 – 29 December 2019) was a Scottish writer and artist. His first novel, Lanark (1981), is seen as a landmark of Scottish fiction. He published novels, short stories, plays, poetry and translations, and wrote on politics and the history of English and Scots literature. His works of fiction combine realism, fantasy, and science fiction with the use of his own typography and illustrations, and won several awards.

He studied at Glasgow School of Art from 1952 to 1957. As well as his book illustrations, he painted portraits and murals, including one at the Òran Mór venue and one at Hillhead subway station. His artwork has been widely exhibited and is in several important collections. Before Lanark, he had plays performed on radio and TV.

His writing style is postmodern and has been compared with those of Franz Kafka, George Orwell, Jorge Luis Borges and Italo Calvino. It often contains extensive footnotes explaining the works that influenced it. His books inspired many younger Scottish writers, including Irvine Welsh, Alan Warner, A. L. Kennedy, Janice Galloway Chris Kelso and Iain Banks. He was writer-in-residence at the University of Glasgow from 1977 to 1979, and professor of Creative Writing at Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities from 2001 to 2003.

Gray was a civic nationalist and a republican, and wrote supporting socialism and Scottish independence. He popularised the epigram "Work as if you live in the early days of a better nation" (taken from a poem by Canadian poet Dennis Leigh) which was engraved in the Canongate Wall of the Scottish Parliament Building in Edinburgh when it opened in 2004. He lived almost all his life in Glasgow, married twice, and had one son. On his death The Guardian referred to him as "the father figure of the renaissance in Scottish literature and art".

ALASDAIR GRAY (SCOTTISH 1934-2019) PORTRAIT OF SEATED FIGURE WITH DRAM Signed, dated, titled and inscribed lower left: 'Ian Fleming, good school teacher of art and friend - drawn 1972, hand-coloured 2017,' ink and gouache 38.5cm x 41cm (15.25in x 16.25in) In the final few years of his life, Gray would re-visit sketches from earlier decades, colourising blocks of the composition with paint and adding inscriptions offering details he recalled of their subjects and sittings. In this case it would appear he has misremembered… Gray recalled enjoyed a dram from time to time with his friend, the art teacher Ian Fleming. However, it does not in fact appear to be Fleming depicted here, and despite Gray's inscription the identity of the sitter remains unknown. It is nonetheless a stylish and stylized period portrait of an intellectual-looking older man enjoying both the whiskey and Gray's company, and a fine example of Gray's distinctive take on portraiture.

The film was to tell the story of a doomed love affair, with the images acting as flashbacks or memories. This significant example of Gray's work has been loaned for exhibitions of Gray's work throughout the years, notably in the exhibition 'Now and Then' mounted by the Sorcha Dallas Gallery in Glasgow in 2008, which saw the nine works in the Lochhead series re-united for the first time.

A student of the Glasgow School of Art and member of The Young Glasgow Group collective, Gibbons was the first living female artist to be exhibited at Glasgow's Third Eye Centre. Despite a long and critically well-regarded career, with works featured in many institutional collections around the UK, Gibbons' work is only now really achieving the recognition it deserves. She was recently included in Tate's critically acclaimed exhibition Women in Revolt! Art and Activism in the UK 1970-1990. In 2023 her solo show at Celine, Glasgow was rated in Frieze Magazine's top ten shows of 2023. She has exhibited in New York and London in recent years, having recently been taken on by Hales Gallery, London, who are exposing her work to a new generation of collectors. As Hales note in their artist's biography, she has long been championed by artists Lucy Stein, Andrew Cranston, poet JF Hendry, art historian Susannah Thompson and her friend, the writer and artist Alasdair Gray. Here, Gray sympathetically conveys the likeness of his friend and artistic colleague and this poster demonstrates the truth in The Guardian's statement that; ‘A peculiarity of Gray’s graphic work is that it sometimes appears at its best in reproduction.’

The scene is a chaotic one, which finds its origins in the original painting by Rembrandt, c. 1652, of the same name. In Rembrandt’s work, a scholar is transfixed by an orb of light that holds a secret code. In Gray’s version, all the knowledge of life swirls around this incredibly detailed work, intertwining symbols of death, love and the human experience. Gray has said that the figure of Faust ‘is an idealised version of me, busily introspecting.’ As the original tracing cloth has been lost, only a few dyeline prints and photocopies of this work exist. However, as The Guardian proclaimed ‘A peculiarity of Gray’s graphic work is that it sometimes appears at its best in reproduction.’

        Est: £2,000 - £4,000

ALASDAIR GRAY (SCOTTISH 1934-2019) PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST CAROLE GIBBONS Mixed media on brown paper 40cm x 32cm (15,75in x 12.5in) Carole Gibbons was born in Glasgow in 1935, and continues her art practice from her studio there to this day. Here we see Gray sketching her portrait as a young woman and artist - her hands full of the tools of her craft, her eye considering the subject of her drawing, lost in concentration.

ALASDAIR GRAY THE NEW ROOM (FILM SEQUENCE WITH LIZ LOCHHEAD SERIES) - 1972 Acrylic, crayon, oil, pencil and watercolour on brown paper on board Exhibited: 'Now and Then', Sorcha Dallas Gallery, Glasgow, 2008 Literature: p.157, 'Alasdair Gray: A Life in Pictures', by Alasdair Gray, published by Canongate, Edinburgh 2020 Note: This work is from an important series in Gray's career and a significant undertaking; 'Film sequence with Liz Lochhead', in which Gray created artworks to illustrate Lochhead's poetry, which were then filmed by Malcolm Hossick, a BBC producer. The poems were written and the images finished, but the film that was to unite them fell through. 106cm x 127cm (41.75in x 50in)
