      Frederick Percy Graves (1837-1903) o/c Portrait of a Lady. A large, framed oil on canvas portrait of Lady Mary FitzGerald (O'Brien), Countess of Kildare. Lady Mary was the daughter of William O'Brien, 3rd Earl of Inchiquin and the wife of Robert FitzGerald, 19th Earl of Kildare. This painting, presumably a copy of a work painted from life, shows her in 3/4 length, her body facing right, looking directly out at the viewer, in 19th c dress. It was painted by British painter Frederick Percy Graves. It is signed "F. P. Graves" on the reverse and dated 1868. The text in the lower right reads "Mary, daughter of 3rd Earl Inchquin Married March 7 1708 Robert 19th Earl of Kildare." Size: frame is 53" X 43.25" stretcher is 40" X 50". CONDITION: Repair to lower right which can be seen from reverse, small surface repair to lower left. All-over craquelure, especially heavy in the sitter's hair. Quite a bit of "bloom" to the varnish, which obscures the painting.

She was the sister of General Frederick Goldsmid' (on a label on the reverse) oil on canvas, unframed 30½ x 25 in. (77.5 x 63.5 cm.)
