Artist Abbott Fuller Graves was born in 1859, and began his studies at the Institution of Technology in Boston, Massachusetts. Deciding early that he wanted to paint flowers, he set out for Paris to meet a highly respected painter of flowers, Georges Jennin. A gifted architect and painter, Abbott Graves began teaching at the Cowles Art School in 1886, but quit to pursue his art full-time. He soon found a commercial market for his genre paintings, and acquired jobs at French magazines as an illustrator from 1902 to 1905.
