Hubert Gravelot (Paris, 1699 - 1773) 'The Incident' Oil on canvas Hubert Gravelot is not much recorded as a painter, but his not inconsiderable influence was felt in London in the field of draughtsmanship. Here his energies as a teacher, both at his own school and at the St. Martin's Lane Academy, made a considerable impact. The young Thomas Gainsborough attended this institution and received much encouragement; indeed he is recorded as painting in backgrounds to Gravelot's pictures in the mid 1740's. With his great friend Henry Wyndham, later chair of Sotheby's in London, he enrolled at the Sorbonne to learn French. Neither finished the course, spending more time eating out and watching Marx Brothers films. After a short spell in Australia, David went to South Africa where he worked for Wildenstein, eventually returning to London where he joined the Old Master Paintings Department of Sotheby's. He subsequently worked for Artemis Fine Art, a leading Old Master Art Consultancy. He eventually set up on his own in Dover Street, London, but closed it in 2000. He went on to reinvent himself as a cabinet maker in Shropshire, where he lived until he died last year.

Au milieu s'élève une colonnade circulaire. Sur chacune des tables, on fait partir une pièce d'artifice. Dans la partie supérieure, sous une sorte de tente, un orchestre de musiciens et quantité de figures . 2.
