      Est: €4,000 - €5,000

JOSUA DE GRAVE (Amsterdam, 1643-The Hague, 1712). "Shepherds with their flock watering in a classical landscape. 1700. Oil on canvas. Relined. Signed and dated at lower left. Sold at Sotheby's, auction 2007, lot 19. It presents slight craquelure on the pictorial surface. Measurements: 52 x 73.5 cm; 83 x 104 cm (frame). In this landscape painting with ruins and shepherds, several aspects that Joshua de Grave worked with special care and remarkable results converge: the composition in wide panoramic views and the introduction of archaeological elements combined with genre scenes. Indeed, vast plains run away towards mountain ranges that follow one after the other naturally, until the outline of the last one is blurred by the effect of the atmosphere. The river zigzagging along one side helps to define the perspective. A castle stands out on the top of the mountain, accentuating the lyricism of the landscape, as does the crown of the castle, carved with Greek scenes, which stands on a large pedestal. An ancient slab is half submerged in the ground. Two peasants lead their cattle along the winding path. The whole is full of poetry. Josua de Grave was a Dutch draughtsman and painter of the Golden Age. In his pictorial work, he focused on imaginary and Italianate landscapes, often with a strong emphasis on perspective. In 1659 he joined the Confraternity of Saint Luke in Haarlem. De Grave was also known for his topographical drawings of the southern Netherlands, including Maastricht and some in France during the years 1667-1668, most notably the drawings of the military camps of Stadholder William III during the campaigns against the French in 1674-1676.His topographical work is often confused with that of Valentijn Klotz (and his brother Barnardus Klotz), with whom he made several trips together. He drew mainly in black or brown pen with grey wash.

      Est: $3,000 - $4,000

A view near Maastricht ( recto ); A sketch of a village ( verso ) signed 'Jos—a De Grave:', inscribed and dated 'Bij mastricht 1671.7:m:/6:d [6 July 1671]' pen and brown ink, grey wash, fragmentary foolscap watermark 51/4 x 8 in. (132 x 205 mm.) NOTES De Grave stopped in Maastricht in mid-1669 on his return from a trip to France and stayed there till the end of 1671. From these two years about sixty drawings of Maastricht and its surroundings are extant. A drawing of Maastricht dated 9 September 1671 is in a private collection in Amsterdam, J. Giltay, Le cabinet d'un amateur, Dessins flamands et hollandais des XVIe et XVIIe siŠcles d'une collection priv‚e d'Amsterdam, exhib. cat., Rotterdam, Boymans-van Beuningen Museum and elsewhere, 1976, no. 70, pl. 60. A drawing of Chantilly of 1668, dated in the same way as the present sheet, was sold at Christie's New York, 30 January 1998, lot 370. De Grave enrolled in the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1659. His style is often confused with that of Valentin Klotz (c.1650-after 1718) whom he met in Maastricht. Both were officers in the Dutch army and participated as draughtsmen to the campaigns of 1672-6 led by William III against the French (see lot 96). In 1671 Maastricht was not part of Holland but of the Spanish Low Countries, and was to be invaded by the French in May 1672.
