VITTORIO GRASSI (1878-1955) TAORMINA. 1933. 39x24 inches, 99x61 cm. I.G.A.P., Rome. Condition B: creases and abrasions in margins, image, and along vertical and horizontal folds. Framed. Grassi was a "self-taught painter. . . active in the field of illustration and stained glass, he also decorated a part of the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome. In advertising posters, he distinguished himself with representations of landscapes and cars, with an unmistakable graphic cut and richness of chromatic contrast" (Bolaffi p. 106). Here, he presents the large, ancient Greek amphitheater located in the Sicilian commune of Taormina, above the Ionian sea, with a view of Mount Etna in the distance. Travel Italia p. 138.

Ein Bogengang im Kolosseum. Öl auf Holz. 23,2 x 14,8 cm. Um 1910-12. Der Maler und Illustrator Vittorio Grassi war als Künstler Autodidakt und trat 1903 erstmalig mit seinen Werken in Rom an die Öffentlichkeit. Grassi erlangte schnell eine größere Bekanntheit in der römischen Kunstszene und gehörte mit Onorato Orlandi (1848-1939) und Giacomo Balla (1871-1958) zu den Mitgliedern der 1904 gegründeten Künstlergruppierung XXV della campagna romana. 1913 erhielt Grassi eine Professur an der römischen Accademia di Belle Arti, seit 1921 bekleidete er zudem ein Lehramt an der dortigen Scuola Superiore di Architettura. Die vorliegende Studie entstammt der Frühzeit des Künstlers. Das kleine Bildchen, das einen Winkel aus dem Kolosseum zeigt, besticht durch die Originalität des Bildausschnitts und durch seinen Sinn für formale Reduktion. Das fein abgestufte, auf wenige Grau- und Ockertöne reduzierte Kolorit gibt das gleißende, warme Sonnenlicht eines römischen Sommertages überzeugend wieder. - Wir bitten darum, Zustandsberichte zu den Losen zu erfragen, da der Erhaltungszustand nur in Ausnahmefällen im Katalog angegeben ist. - Please ask for condition reports for individual lots, as the condition is usually not mentioned in the catalogue.
