FRANZ XAVER GRÄSSEL Obersasbach/Baden 1861 - 1948 Emmering/Fürstenfeldbruck „Enten am Wasser“. Oel auf Leinwand 1930. Signiert und datiert. Verso auf dem Spannrahmen signiert und betitelt. 62 x 83,5 cm. Mit zwei kleinen, sorgfältigen Vernähungen (recto nicht sichtbar) auf der Rückwand. Grässel studierte an der Karlsruher Akademie bei C. Hoff, später an der Münchner Akademie bei W. Lindenschmit d.J. Zwischen 1891-93 lebte er in Gutach und Obersasbach, bevor er 1894 nach München zurückkehrte. Er spezialisierte sich auf bäuerliche Genremalerei und schuf sich durch die Darstellung von Enten, Gänsen und Hühnern einen Ruf als Tiermaler. „Gräßel kommt zwar aus der Tradition der Gründerzeit, was sich auch noch bei den Tierbildern mit ihrer Betonung auf das Inhaltliche zeigt, dennoch führte er das Genre durch die genaue Beobachtung der Tiere und des Freilichts zum Impressionismus.“ (Bruckmann, Münchner Maler im 19./20. Dimensions: 40 x 50 cm Gold painted wooden stucco frame: 58 x 67.5 cm Good condition Provenance: Collection Matthias Karl, Mogersdorf, Austria; private collection, Germany For his typical depictions of ducks influenced by Impressionism he was also known as ‘duck painter’ or ‘duck Gräßel’ Condition: The painting shows regular craquelure. There are some tiny unevennesses in the wooden panel. The frame shows traces of use with some cracks in the corners and partially small amendments in the stucco. The plywood board measures 40 x 50 cm and the dimensions of the frame are 58 x 67.5 cm. Franz Gräßel (1861-1948) Franz Gräßel attended the class of Conrad Hoff at the Art Academy of Karlsruhe from 1878 to 1884. During this period he was mainly interested in genre depictions and portraits. He was a teacher at the Gymnasium of St. Stephan in Straßburg before going on a study trip. He then continued studying at the Academy in Munich at Wilhelm von Lindenschmit (1886-90). In 1900 the painter moved to Fürstenfeldbruck, where he was a founding member and chairman of the ‘Brucker’ association of artists. He was appointed royal academy professor of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich by Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria in 1911. Works by Gräßel are held by important collections such as the National Gallery Berlin, the Bavarian State Painting Collections in Munich, Nuremberg and Freiburg. (tm) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
