        Est: €3,000 - €5,000

PETER GRANT (1915-2003) Figure of Christ and Thomas Ashe from the 'Threshold of Freedom Commemorative Memorial at Rath Cross of the Battle of Ashbourne 1916',Prototype plaster model of the main sculpture, 87cm high, 110cm wide;together with a full size side Relief of the Defenders of Fingal, fibre glass, 198cm high, 61cm wide. The prototype plaster model of the main feature of the Ashbourne Memorial designed as a unique double sided sculpture with the figure of Thomas Ashe on one side and the figure of Christ on the other both holding the same cross. It was exhibited at the Institute of Sculptors of Ireland Exhibition in 1956. A life size original figure of one of the reliefs intended for the side of the memorial in fibre glass. This consists of a tall figure of an Irish volunteer soldier in uniform with a raven at his feet alluding to a local band started by Ashe. It was intended as one of two reliefs to be placed on either side of the monument's archway, it is known as the Defenders of Fingal. The side panels were not attached to the monument until 2016. This is due to the fact that insufficient funds were available back in 1959 to attach them and they were duly attached as part of the commemoration of 1916 just last year.
