At the age of eighteen, he traveled to Europe, spending time in Great Britain and France. Grant worked in Portland, Maine, before establishing a studio at 12 West Street in Boston by 1882. He was a member of the Boston Art Club, where his works were exhibited between 1877 and 1905. Thirty-six examples of his work were exhibited by Boston dealer Noyes & Blakeslee (exhibition dates unrecorded) and another twenty at the Boston gallery of J. Eastman Chase in 1884. Titles of the exhibited works indicate that the artist had spent time in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Great Britain and France. By 1887, he had relocated to New York City, where he supported himself by producing reproductive etchings of well-known paintings. Grant exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1878 and at the National Academy of Design in 1882, 1887-89, 1891-92 and 1894 (posthumously). He died in 1893.
