Susan Gransby Art for Sale and Sold Prices

b. 1947 -

I was born in London, England and, at ten, immigrated to Vancouver with my family. My partner, writer Harrill Bjornson, and I live in Burnaby, B.C.


I graduated with Honours in Printmaking from the Vancouver School of Art after obtaining my degree in Philosophy from the University of B.C. After working as a journalist for several years, I began full-time art work at the Malaspina Printmakers Society and now work in my home studio. Writing, editing and curating printmaking exhibitions help fulfil other aspects of my lifelong interest in the visual arts.


My etchings, linocuts, monotypes and mixed media works have been exhibited across Canada and the U.S. and in Japan, Spain, Finland and Peru. They are in many private and corporate collections including Vancity, TD Bank, IBM, NCR, The Salient Group, and CP and Westin Hotels as well as such public collections as the Canada Council Art Bank, the Vancouver, Burnaby and Richmond art galleries and the Simon Fraser University gallery.





Urban and industrial structures and architecture have always attracted me.


Sometimes it's a single object, such as the Alexandra Bandstand at English Bay or a crane on the Fraser River or Hong Kong construction site. At other times I enjoy picking out favourite fragments of a building or district and floating them in imagined spaces.


Curator Roger Boulet once described my work as "a refreshingly uncomplicated vision with a relaxed and easy intimacy."


Exploring the city is an adventure and I hope I can impart my discoveries in a playful way. Printmaking provides the ideal process by which to narrow down the endless choice of subjects around me to a few elements that describe the basic atmosphere; bits and pieces picked out of the jigsaw puzzle that constitutes my urban environment.


All these images and impressions are filtered through both recollection and imagination, thereby changing to reflect my personal experience of them.
