      Est: $2,500 - $3,500

EUGENE JACQUES PHILIPPE GRANDIN French, 1839-1919 "Packet Ship 'Bavaria' Cap. Bailey". Depicts the Bavaria, captained by Captain Joseph A. Bailey (1808-1879) of Dartmouth, Massachusetts, at Le Havre, France, flying American and French flags. Signed and dated lower right "Eug. Grandin Havre 1857". The Bavaria was built in New York by William H. Webb and launched in August 1846. Hull #26, she was 908 tons and 160 feet in length. From 1846 to 1853 she sailed in William H. Whitlock's line of packets between New York and Le Havre, averaging her westbound journey in thirty-three days, the fastest of any vessel in Whitlock's line. (Her shortest passage was twenty-three days and her longest was forty-four days.) Early in 1853, the Bavaria was removed from line service and in February of that year she cleared New York for Melbourne under Capt. Bailey. The Bavaria made at least two voyages to San Francisco and the Far East during the Civil War, in 1863 under Capt. Warren and in 1864 under Capt. Higgins. In 1866, she was advertised as sailing in Tupper & Beattie's line of coastal packets between New York and New Orleans. Her presence on this route is unusual, since by the end of the Civil War steam vessels had all but supplanted sailing vessels on coastal routes. Watercolor on paper, 12" x 16". Framed 15.5" x 19.5".
