        Est: $400 - $600

DOROTHY YOUNG GRAHAM (American 1918-2002) Night Dancing - circa 1940 Watercolor and Gouache on card Signed lower right de Young and verso with estate stamp, landscape and titled estate inventory label. 8 inches x 10 inches (unframed) Provenance: From the estate of the artist Dorothy Young Graham was born in Geneseo, Illinois in 1918. She received a BA from Stephens College followed by a BFA (1942) from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where she studied under Grant Wood (1891-1942). Additionally, she studied with Fletcher Martin (1904-1979) and print making under Adolph Dehn (1895-1968), both of whom strongly influenced her work. In December 1941 she married Annawan, Illinois dentist Dr. Ralph W. Graham. Immediately upon graduation from the University of Iowa in 1942 she began to exhibit, beginning first at the Davenport Museum of Art (Now the Figge Art Museum), Davenport, Iowa. In June of 1944 she exhibited at the American Annual Exhibition of Watercolors and Drawings at the Art Institute, Chicago. In a review of the show, Chicago Tribune columnist Eleanor Jewett described a painting by Graham titled "Sleepless Night" as "…another shivery picture which sets ghosts to walking." She continued exhibiting at the International Watercolor Society at the Chicago Art Institute, and the Paul Theobald Gallery also in Chicago. She was the recipient of the David Palmer Award and the Wagner Printing Company Purchase Award. For the most part, her paintings reflect her Midwest surroundings often in idyllic, surrealistic, mystical or dark terms. Based on her style and Chicago exhibition history it is hard not to believe that her path must have crossed with noted surrealist painter Gertrude Abercrombie (1909-1977) and it is likely they had works in the same exhibitions. GREAT REGIONALIST CIRCUS PAINTING C. 1945

        Est: $150 - $300

DOROTHY YOUNG GRAHAM (American 1918-2002) Circus Juggler c. 1930's Gouache on illustration board Signed lower right "De Young" and estate stamp and title label on verso 10 inches x 6 inches (unframed) Provenance: The estate of the artist Dorothy Young Graham received a BA from Stephens College followed by a BFA (1942) from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where she studied under Grant Wood (1891-1942). Additionally she studied with Fletcher Martin (1904-1979) and print making under Adolph Dehn (1895-1968) both of whom strongly influenced her work. Furthermore, she also studied under Robert Brackman (1898-1980) whose influence can readily been seen in her work. Immediately upon graduation from the University of Iowa in 1942 she began to exhibit, first at the Davenport Museum of Art (now the Figge Art Museum), Davenport, Iowa, then the Art Institute Chicago (1944) and she continued exhibiting up until her death in 2002 - primarily in the Midwest. In 1940 she married Illinois Dentist Dr. Ralph W. in Graham and together they purchased an acreage near Atkinson, Illinois where she built a large studio from which she painted. Together they raised two children and with other local artists she was a founding member (1957) of the Geneseo Art League. She exhibited at the International Watercolor Society at the Chicago Art Institute, and the Paul Theobald Gallery also in Chicago and was the recipient of the David Palmer Award and the Wagner Printing Company Purchase Award. Dorothy's works may be signed Dorothy Young, Dorothy Young Graham or often "DYG" or "De Young." Her paintings reflect her Midwest surroundings and a certain melancholy offset by a child-like enthusiasm or naiveté. Her works vividly capture the American period of 1940-1970 often in idyllic, mystical or darker terms. She worked primarily in oil, watercolor, and gouache although also dabbled in sculpture.
