Robert Wadsworth Grafton (American, 1876-1936, active Louisiana, 1916-1920), "Reflections of Luggar's Landing, New Basin Canal", 1918, oil on canvas board, signed and dated lower right, artist name inscribed en verso, 16 in. x 20 in., framed, overall 23 3/4 in. x 27 7/8 in. x 3 1/4 in. Provenance: Neal Auction Company, Jan. 30, 2010, lot 324. Note: In the early twentieth century, American Impressionism started flourishing in the Midwest, centered in Indianapolis and South Indiana's Brown County art colony (which had ties to Chicago). Inspired and encouraged by the artists T.C. Steele, William Forsyth and John Ottis Adams—collectively known as the Hoosier Group—the next generation of artists were motivated to paint landscapes of the world around them. Robert Grafton and his friend and fellow Indiana artist, Louis Oscar Griffith, often visited New Orleans where they were captivated by the historic buildings and waterways that made up the city as well as the lively art community which was largely centered in the French Quarter. In the painting offered here, Grafton used thick, lush brushwork to beautifully render the reflections of the boats in the water of the New Basin Canal. Luggers were small single sail wooden boats used regionally to bring seafood (mainly oysters) from the coast to the city, and they were extremely important to the economy of New Orleans during the 1914 to 1920 period in which Grafton painted. As shipping and refrigeration technology evolved, the canal became less and less important, and by 1950 it was completely filled in to create the Lafitte Corridor, Pontchartrain Express Way and West End Boulevard. Grafton’s painting captures the vibrancy and color of a very particular time in the city’s history.

Robert Wadsworth Grafton (American, 1876-1936, active New Orleans, 1916-1920) , "Pirate's Alley at Royal Street, New Orleans", 1919, oil on canvas, signed and dated lower right, "Meredith Long & Company" label with artist on backing board, 24 1/4 in. x 16 in., framed with artist plaque . Provenance: Meredith Long & Company, Houston, TX; Estate of James H. Stone, New Orleans. Note: From 1916-1920, Robert Grafton rented a studio in the French Quarter during the winters, sharing space with his friend Louis Oscar Griffith who was also escaping the harsh Midwestern weather. During his time here, Grafton enjoyed painting the many historic views of the city, particularly those in the area of the French Quarter surrounding St. Louis Cathedral. His beautiful pastel palette greatly complements St. Anthony’s garden as well as the buildings that line Pirate’s Alley, creating the lovely atmospheric effect of a bright sunny day. The alley, which runs along the western side of the cathedral, has a rich and often embellished history, with legends of the pirates Jean and Pierre Lafitte meeting with President Andrew Jackson. While Pierre Lafitte was in fact detained in the “Calabozo,” or prison (which was located next to the cathedral in what is now the Cabildo), he famously escaped in 1814, perhaps through this eponymous alleyway, and eventually both brothers helped the United States Military during the Battle of New Orleans.

Note: Father Jacques Marquette (1637-1674), who along with Louis Joliet, explored the upper Mississippi River Valley area, was a famed linguist who was able to communicate with the various Native American tribes of the Midwest. The spring where Marquette and the Potawatami Chief met still exists and is now known as the International Friendship Gardens in the Dunes Country of Northwest Indiana. Note: This painting -- interesting for both its style and format -- is loosely based on late 19th century idylls of similar (but usually less populated) subjects by Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) and others. Its studied contrast between the diaphanous classical draperies of the dancing maidens and the Renaissance-period garb of the two gentlemen (together with their characteristic expressions) suggests a classical allegory of the sort alluded to in the title above.

Provenance: Descended in the family of Ernest Lee Jahncke (1877-1960) and Cora Van Voorhis Stanton, New Orleans. Note: Robert Wadsworth Grafton wintered in New Orleans between 1915 and 1928 Very active in the local art scene, he depicted scenes of the Vieux Carré and other historical environs of the city. Like his close colleague Louis Oscar Griffith (American, 1875-1956, active New Orleans, 1916-1917), Grafton beautifully rendered views of the busy New Basin Canal. The St. Charles Hotel commissioned these two artists to paint works for the hotel in the winter of 1916-17 The hotel created a booklet "Souvenir of New Orleans, The Paris of America" which reproduced the paintings they created during this time. The work offered here depicts a luggar tied up along canal. A true work of American Impressionism, Grafton uses soft brushwork and a brilliant palette to convey the clarity of light during winter in New Orleans.
