Post-incunabula leaf with beautiful old hand coloured woodcut showing Saint Magdalen washing the feet of Christ with her hair. From the 'Golden Legend'. Collection of the Lives of Saints by Jacobus de Voragine (1228-1298).Edition by J.Grüniger, Strasburg 1502. The page layout is closely related to the German edition of 1488 by Anton Koberger, see last image (for information only).The woodcuts are assigned to Urs Graff and Hans Schauffelein. Beautiful early edition with all the details. A post-incunabula = Is a text printed in the period between 1500 and 1540. In their external form, the post-incunabula still follow the conventions of handwritten books to a greater or lesser extent (codex). Measurements of the woodcut: 9 by 15 cm.

Post incunabula woodcut partly oldcoloured in ocher. The agony in the garden; Christ kneeling to left at centre; the angel holding a chalice at upper left, the three apostles asleep in foreground and in right background the soldiers approaching. . From a series of woodcuts illustrating the scenes from the Lives of the Virgin and Christ. They never appear together as a set, but parts were used for various publications by Johann Geiler von Keysersberg. They first occur in 'Das Leben Jesu Christi', Strasbourg: Knoblouch 1507. This print is from the same period, same area of the ones done by Urs Graf or Hans Wechtlin 1503-1510. The woodcut artist was not found during my research.

Collation: A-E6. 25 gravures sur bois à pleine page signées par Urs Graf de ses initiales sauf la dernière, non signée, attribuée à Hans Wechtlin. (Soigneusement lavé, feuillet A1 poussiéreux et avec petite déchirure restaurée sans manque.) Maroquin noisette moderne signé R. Laurent, étui. Première édition latine sous ce titre. Les mêmes planches figurent également dans deux éditions allemandes (1507 et 1509) et dans une édition latine non datée (voir Brunet IV, 421). Les très belles gravures sont bien encrées et trois d'entres elles sont des vues de Jérusalem. TOUTES LES ÉDITIONS SONT RARES. Brunet IV, 421. Manque à Fairfax-Murray.

(Soiled, some spotting, title with small repairs, short tears at edges.) 16th-century blind-tooled quarter leather over wooden boards, brass catch, pastedowns from leaves of a German piracy of the Nuremberg Chronicle (spine repaired, clasp lacking, free endpapers renewed). Provenance: some annotations in Latin by a 16th century reader -- deleted stamp on C3. The second Latin edition of this popular text with Graf's masterful suite of woodcuts. They constitute his first major effort in woodcut, and after producing these Graf was employed by the Basel printers Froben, and Adam Petri. His 'subject matter and his experiments with woodcut techniques make Graf an original and highly imaginative artist' (Grove). Graf appears to have been an adventurous and, on occasion, violent man, frequently in trouble with the authorities. Between 1510 and 1521-22 he was enlisted as a mercenary soldier in foreign campaigns in Italy and France.
