John Newton, Author of "Amazing Grace", Rare ALS Re: Sermons & Recent Injury

        Est: $5,000 - $6,000

John Newton, Author of "Amazing Grace", Rare ALS Re: Sermons & Recent Injury1p, measuring 7.25" x 5.25", London, dated March 5, 1794. An autograph letter signed "John Newton", missing the opening salutation. Addressed to Dr. John Ryland, the letter discusses a recent injury and Newton's praise of a recent book by Andrew Fuller. The letter has flattened mail folds and light foxing. Staining and minor paper loss at the top edge from where the letter was sealed. Mounting residue on verso. Boldly signed. Additional foxing and toning to the larger sheet as well as to the engravings. Reading in part: "Fox's Sermon in 82. It is new in the Pr[int. I] would send you one, when they come out, if the price of Carriage, was not more than the Sermon. But perhaps they may find their way to Bristol. On the 19 Jan'y I strain'd my instep violently by a fall in the street, & was confined near 3 weeks. But the Lord has enabled me to return to my usual course of services. But it will probably be some time before I can walk about as formerly. But it has been a Merciful Visitation. Hold Then me up & I shall be safe, is a needful prayer for me, both in the respect to my Natural & my Spiritual Walk. One false step in either, may be attended with painful consequences... I can make no remarks upon Mr. Fuller's book, but such as would have the appearance of Compliments. I rejoyce [sic] that He wrote it. I have read it three times. I think it one of the best books I have read; & I think they will hardly attempt to answer it. Ah! my friend, the points in which he & Dr. Priestly differ, are of real importance. May the Lord bless you in all your connections. Forget not to pray for your affectionate John Newton." The letter has been tipped into a larger sheet, measuring 7.5" x 8.75", so that both the front and addressed verso may be viewed. With two engravings of Newton, one dated 1808. The book praised by Newton was Andrew Fuller's book published the year prior, entitled "The Calvinistic and Socinian Systems Examined and Compared as to Their Moral Tendency." John Newton (1725-1807) was a slave trader who had a crisis of conscience after suffering a stroke and became an abolitionist and a priest in the Church of England. He was ordained in 1764 and spent the following 43 years of his life as a pastor. He is best known as the author of the famous hymn "Amazing Grace", which was published in 1779 and inspired by his own spiritual journey.
