*GRABAR, IGOR (1871-1960) Willow in Bloom

    Est: £100,000 - £120,000

*GRABAR, IGOR (1871-1960) Willow in Bloom, signed and dated “Aprel 1939”, also further inscribed in Cyrillic “Baget zolotoi”, titled and dated on the stretcher. Oil on canvas , 66 by 91.5 cm. Provenance: Collection of the Czech opera singer Štefa Petrova (1909–1972), Prague. Russian Sale — Paintings, Sotheby’s London, 12 June 2007, lot 134. Acquired at the above sale by the present owner. Important private collection, Europe. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert V. Petrov. Willow in Bloom, offered here for sale, was painted by Igor Grabar in the late 1930s, when, despite the huge workload imposed by his administrative and teaching duties and by the writing of his books on Ilya Repin and Valentin Serov, the artist felt the resurgence of a creative uplift and an enthusiasm for landscape painting. The winter and spring of 1939 proved to be particularly productive. Willow in Bloom is one of the works that Grabar painted in April 1939 in Abramtsevo. Still keen to convey the moment at which the first flush of green appears, the annual springtime miracle of the quickening of everything around him, Grabar relies, in the works making up this cycle, not on artistic technique, but on recording as precisely as possible the clear April sky, the fleeting shades of light and the first translucent undergrowth. Drawing on the traditions of the Russian realist school of painting of the late 19th century, Grabar painted his Abramtsevo canvases while “trying to forget absolutely all the -isms and to be a mere onlooker admiring the splendour of nature”. He chose views that were as broad as possible, almost panoramic, with the valley of the River Moskva and a wide, open sky with a low horizon acting as the background. The artist himself thought that he had achieved something at that time: “Overcoming Impressionism gave the brushstroke great freedom, whereby it immediately liberated both the treatment of form and painting, which became simpler and closer to a synthesis” (I. Grabar, Moia zhizn, p. 292). Willow in Bloom can thus be seen as a kind of epitome of that productive period, so completely and characteristically did it embody the artist’s main ideas in the late 1930s. The provenance of the work is also noteworthy. It belonged for many years to the famous Czech opera singer Štefa Petrová (1909–1972), who seems to have acquired the landscape in Moscow during the World War II. For over 60 years, Willow in Bloom was owned by the singer’s family and descendants.

Un paesaggio innevato, un tema assai caro a Grabar, qui raffigurato come una scena romantica tutta giocata su una tavolozza dai toni pastello. 19,5 x 28,4 cm Oil on canvas on board. Signed in Cyrillic lower right ‘Grabar’. A snowy landscape, a very dear theme to Grabar, depicted here as a romantic scene all played on a palette of pastel tones. 7,6 x 11.1 in. 3800

IGOR EMANUILOVICH GRABAR 1871-1960 Fiera in città Olio su cartone. Firmato in cirillico in basso a destra: ‘Igor Grabar’. 33 x 46 cm Oil on cardboard. Signed in Cyrillic lower right: ‘Igor Grabar’. A wisely narrated city fair: on the left the market pews, on the right persons just sketched. The playfullness of the scene is rendered beautifully thanks to the unique use of light, all played on the effects given by strong and vivid colors. 12,9 x 18,1 in. Sanguine on paper. Signed lower right ‘Petrella da Bologna Venezia’. 12,6 x 16,9 in. 6000

    * GRABAR, IGOR (1871-1960) Still Life With Apples and a Black Shawl, signed and indistinctly dated 190?. Oil on canvas, 63 by 63.5 cm. Provenance: Private collection, Europe. Authenticity of the work has been confirmed by the expert I. Geraschenko. Authenticity has also been confirmed by the expert S. Podstanitsky. Authenticity has also been confirmed by the expert T. Ermakova. Igor Grabar’s Still Life with Apples and a Black Shawl is a brilliant example of a genre that preoccupied him during the first few years after 1900. Grabar first developed an interest in still life when he was teaching at Anton Ažbe’s school in Munich. There, he made the drawing of still life an integral part of his coursework, believing it would help his students enhance their sense of form and colour. Still Life with Apples and a Black Shawl reflects all the main stylistic features of Grabar’s oeuvre of the early 1900s. The artist is particularly meticulous about the arrangement of the components of his still life, skilfully combining materials and colours. This work is a striking example of his masterful handling of the various textures, which comes through in the palpable plumpness of the ripe fruit in the foreground; the delicacy with which he portrays the highlights and reflections on the china and silver; the transparency of the crystal visible in the background; the homely feel of the heavy black shawl slung over the wooden table, contrasting to great effect with the crockery and fruit arranged upon it. This work also exhibits a feature very typical of Grabar’s still lifes of that period, namely the use of traditional Dutch blue and white china. This is the artist’s way of drawing parallels with the images he had seen in European painting on a recent trip abroad – in this case, with the 17th century Dutch still lifes. It is quite clear, however, that this picture represents a different, modern interpretation of the genre. This interpretation, on the one hand, embraced the most progressive developments in Russian still life painting; but, on the other, was based to a certain extent on the principles of Impressionism, which Grabar had begun to incorporate in his art at that time. Here, an Impressionist influence is recognisable in the artist’s use of fine impasto brushstrokes and in the strikingly pronounced diagonal structure of the composition. Still Life with Apples and a Black Shawl is indisputably among the most expressive and important still life compositions created by Igor Grabar in the early 1900s. Still lifes from this period grace the collections of the State Russian Museum and the State Tretyakov Gallery and can also be found in major private collections. This work is a delicate, perceptive reflection of the way of life of a manor house of the Russian gentry, exuding nostalgia for the passing era, so typical of that time, and striving to capture the finest nuances of its unique atmosphere, about to vanish forever.
