The Dilemma of the Discard Signed with monogram lower centre on the stone Oil on canvas, 44.3 x 40.1 cm Provenance: - Auction Christie, Manson & Woods, London, 23 February 1934, lot 68 - Auction Christie's, London, 20 May 1938, lot 52 - Auction Wiener Kunst Auktionen, Vienna, 2 & 3 December 1993, lot 18 - Auction Dorotheum, Vienna, 24 March 1999, lot 127 - Private collection, the Netherlands Note: Registered at the RKD - Netherlands Institute for Art History in The Hague under number 59355. The Dutch painter Barend Graat was an Amsterdam painter of genre, historical scenes, and portraits. His rare early works are Italianate landscapes in the style of P. de Laer, who was also called ‘Il Bamboccio’ which means "ugly doll" or "puppet". This was an allusion to Van Laer's ungainly proportions. Van Laer’s work, which consisted of scenes from Italian folk life, gave rise to an entirely new genre of painting: the Bamboccianti. Although Graat never appears to have visited Italy himself, the current lot clearly falls under the Bamboccianti school. * Condition report available upon request

Artist of the 17. century, Flemish. Oil on canvas (doubled). Due to the dark varnish signature and dating unreadable - probably Barend Graat: "B. Graat" "1699" (?). - Margins somewhat rubbed. OTHER PROPERTIES BARENT GRAAT AMSTERDAM 1628 - 1709 AN EQUESTRIAN PORTRAIT OF A GENTLEMAN, AGED 55, RIDING A BAY HORSE, IN THE POSITION OF THE LEVADE, BEFORE CLASSICAL RUINS IN AN ITALIANATE LANDSCAPE inscribed with the initials and age of the sitter upper left: AE (in ligature) 55./W.F.Z.V.B oil on canvas CATALOGUE NOTE There is only one other equestrian portrait known by Barent Graat, depicting Joan Ortt (1642-1672), which is in a Dutch private collection and which is of a larger format (see C. Dumas, In het zadel. Het Nederlands ruiterportret van 1550 tot 1900, exhibition catalogue, Leeuwarden/Den Bosch/Assen 1979-80, p. 105, cat. no. 88). The Netherlands does not have a long tradition of equestrian portraits as do other Northern European countries and Habsburg Spain. In these lands in the first half of the 17th Century these are mainly portraits of kings, princes or military commanders, intended to impress. During the second half of the 17th Century the equestrian portraits became less the sole preserve of rulers and military commanders: less official and less military. Affluent citizens and merchants were now also portrayed mounted, perhaps as they acquired rural estates.
