Although he became a very successful lawyer and official within the radio and television industry, he never stopped painting privately. Graas lives and works as an artist on the island of Majorca since 1989, where he finds great sources of inspiration for his art. The present painting depicts an abstract composition with figural shapes on a green background. The painting is in good condition considering its age. It is signed and dated lower right ‘GUST GRAAS 1.94’. The work is verso dated, inscribed and signed with monogram ‘6.11.94 P.11 G.G.’. The wooden frame is also in good condition with only small traces of age and use. The framed work measures 110 x 90 cm and the size of the stretcher is 100 x 85 cm. The rectangular format is determined by a gray surface, which is interrupted by different colored shapes and lines. In the upper part are indicated houses and windows. Graas most likely had a Majorcan landscape in mind while depicting the composition, because he has been living and working on the Mediterranean island since 1989. The sheet is signed and dated in pencil lower right, ‘Gust Graas / 9.97’ and mounted in a patinated wooden frame. The back contains a letter from 1997 written by Gust Graas and addressed to the former owner of the painting. The front and the back are mounted under glass all round. The condition of the work is very good, showing minimal wear marks affecting the frame and foxing on the letter. The overall dimensions, with frame, are 48 x 52 cm.
