        J A Gowing (XIX/XX), An unframed but mounted pen and ink drawing, Portrait of Daniel Mendoza 1788 after Charles Jean Robineau, (act 1780 - 1788), signed lower right, 13" x 9 ½" [The English prizefighter Daniel Mendoza was boxing champion of England from 1792 - 1795 and at only 160lb became the only middleweight ever to win the heavyweight Championship of the World. His 'Scientific style" which he introduced employing rapid movement and a variety of defensive techniques enabled him to defeat much larger opponents. His style, described in his book 'The Art of Boxing' was copied by subsequent generations of pugilists

        J A Gowing, (XIX/XX), An unframed but mounted pen and ink and pencil drawing "Richard Humphreys The Boxer" 1789 after John Hoppner (1748 - 1910), signed lower right, 12" x 9" [Richard Humphreys was an English prizefighter famed for being a mentor of Daniel Mendoza and with whom he fought three times between 1788 and 1790, the last occasion being the first time that the general public were charged to watch a sporting event

        J A Gowing (XIX/XX), An unframed but mounted pen and ink and pencil drawing, Portrait of Isaac Perrins 1789 after Conrad Martin Metz, (1749 - 1827), Signed lower right, 12" x 9" [Perrins was an unusual man for a bare knuckle prizefighter. He was also an engineer working on steam engines for Watts company and later head of Manchester fire brigade, dying aged around 50 during service as a fireman. A man of herculean proportions he is probably best remembered for his 'mismatch' fight for the English championship against the much smaller Tom Johnson at Banbury on 22nd October 1879, the drawing above being taken from this fight. Perrins lost exhausted over 62 rounds have been run ragged by his smaller opponent.
