      Mary L Gow, (British 1851-1929) Portrait of a young man in a red hat. 23 1/2 inches x 19 1/2 inches - Oil on George Rowney & Co canvas. Signed indistinctly with initials ''MLG'' in crimson lower left at 45 degree angle - and dated 1873. (signature is rubbed but clear under enhancement) Also signed/inscribed ''Mary Lybody Gow-London'' to lower right of waistcoat. Again dated 1873 on Exhibition or presentation label verso. The sitter is believed to be ''David Cox Esquire'' of East Sussex. Mary Gow was a noted member of the aesthetic movement in London - and was popular for her society genre scenes, figures and portraits in both watercolours and oils. *N.B as Mary Gow rarely signed her middle name many listings refer to her as ''Louise'' ''Lucy'' ''Laura'' or other variations.
