A very good impression with strong contrasts. Both this etching by van der Gouwen (1657-1720) and the earlier version by Matham (1571-1631), see Hollstein 317, derive from a drawing by Matham's step-father Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617).

Der gestrandete Walfisch zwischen Scheveningen und Katwyk. Kupferstich nach Jacob Matham. 27,2 x 33,9 cm. Hollstein (Gouwen) 1, Widerkehr (New Hollstein, Matham) 203, copies e wohl nach III. Wz. Posthorn. Ganz ausgezeichneter, präziser und kräftiger Druck mit der üblichen Mittelfalte, entlang dieser mit Ausbesserungen, im oberen Rand mit bis leicht in die Darstellung reichendem, geschlossenem Einriss, im weißen Rand teils etwas fleckig und angestaubt, sowie vereinzelt mit winzigen Randeinrissen, rechts unten mit winziger Bleistiftnummerierung, leichte Quetschspuren links unten und rechts oben, sonst gut erhalten.
