        Goulet, Lorrie (b. 1925) Malachite Sculpture. Diminutive figural sculpture depicting a softly abstracted female figure with her arm bent over her head, the pose following the natural bands of striated color in the rock, on a square mahogany stand, the stone itself 6 1/2 in. tall; 9 3/4 in. with the base; accompanied by the 2007 exhibition catalogue, Lorrie Goulet, Sixty Years of Sculpting. Known for her sculptural work in stone and wood, Goulet favors female figures of strength that represent solidity, spirituality and femininity. She studied with Josef and Anni Albers at Black Mountain College, and had her first solo show in 1948. Her work is held in many public collections and has been exhibited at many museums and private galleries, including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Whitney Museum, and the Corcoran Gallery. She is regarded as an important early sculptor working in a field historically dominated by men.

        "Garden", carved serpentine stone, signed on left edge and dated 1976, depicting a reclining voluptuous woman lying against a roughly chiseled reticulated field, includes the original black stone block base having a paper label on the underside giving the title, the sculpture is not attached, rests on a single bronze pin, the sculpture itself is 8" x 14, the block base is 2" tall. The only damage is a repaired crack at the back of the mounting hole.

        Lorrie H. (de Creeft) Goulet New York, (Born 1925) Desert Madonna, 1977 marble sculpture signed and dated. Biography from the Archives of askART: Stone, wood and ceramics sculptor Lorrie Goulet, who also makes drawings and lithographs, was born in Riverdale, New York in 1925. Her education included childhood study with Amiee Voorhees at Inwood Pottery Studios in New York City from 1932 to 1936, and with Josef Albers at the avant-garde Black Mountain College in North Carolina during the war years of 1943 and 1944. At this time, she was an apprentice of Jose de Creeft, the sculptor, whom she later married. She taught in New York City at the Museum of Modern Art from 1957 to 1964, the New School for Social Research from 1961, Scarsdale Studio Workshop 1959-1961, and, since 1981, the Art Students League. Her public sculpture commissions include a ceramic relief sculpture for a New York City library in 1958, and one for a hospital in the Bronx, New York City, in 1961; as well as a 1971 stainless steel relief for a police and fire station in the Bronx. The Clay Club Sculpture Center in New York City gave Goulet her first important one-person exhibition in 1948. Among other of Goulet's many one-person exhibitions are seven at the Kennedy Galleries in New York City from 1971 through 1986. Group exhibitions include the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York City, 1948-1950, 1953 and 1955; National Academy of Design, New York City, 1966, 1975 and 1977; Art Students League in 1982; as well as shows at the Museum of Modern Art, and American Federation of Art, New York City. She has exhibited in Barcelona, Algiers and Zagreb. Lorrie Goulet is a member of the American Sculptors Guild and a founding member of the Audubon Artists. Collections holding Lorrie Goulet's work include the National Academy of Design; New York Public Library, New York City; National Museum of Women in the Arts, and Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, both in Washington, D.C.; New Jersey State Museum, Trenton; Boston University; and Wichita Museum of Art, Kansas.

        Lorrie Goulet (American, b. 1925- ), color lithograph March 1977 exhibition poster for Kennedy Galleries (New York) show of the artist's work with image of "Dance of Spring" with modern abstracted nudes in black, blue, white, iron rust red, and yellow gracefully twisting and twirling on grey and white ground. Artist's signature within matrix at center right. Framed 30.75" x 22.75". Note: Goulet is one of America's foremost twentieth century sculptors. The artist studied under Amiee Voorhees at the Inwood Pottery Studios (1932-36), Black Mountain College, North Carolina under Josef Albers (1943-45) and served as an apprentice to sculptor Jose de Creeft who later becamer her husband. Goulet's first major solo exhibition took place in 1948 at the Clay Club Sculpture Center, New York City. During the following years exhibitions of her sculpture, drawings and lithographs took place at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the American Federation of Art as well as in international exhibitions in Algiers, Barcelona and Zagreb. During the 1970's her art was annually exhibited at the Kennedy Galleries, New York. At this time the Kennedy Galleries was also a major publisher of contemporary American prints and Dance of Spring was undoubtedly commissioned by them. Brilliantly delineating both form and movement, Lorrie Goulet's Dance of Spring emphasizes her famous sculptural elements within the lithographic medium by employing thick, curved lines and solid masses of colors.
