      • William Raymond Dommersen,  - Utrecht, Holland;  …
        Nov. 22, 2023

William Raymond Dommersen,  - Utrecht, Holland;  …

        Est: £700 - £900

William Raymond Dommersen,  British 1850-1927-  Utrecht, Holland;  oil on canvas, signed 'WR Dommersen' (lower right), titled and inscribed with initials 'Uthrecth [sic.] / Holland / WR' verso, 46.3 x 36 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Christie's, London, 21 January 2015 (£1,375).  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  William Raymond Dommersen was the son of the painter Pieter Cornelis Dommersen (1833-1918), and nephew of Cornelis Christiaan Dommersen (1842-1928), also a painter. His output consists almost exclusively of landscapes and marine scenes, the compositions of which, with low, flat horizons punctuated by buildings of an unmistakably Netherlandish appearance, gesture towards the strong influence of earlier Dutch landscape artists such as Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682) and Jan van Goyen (1596-1656). The present work, depicting a river scene in the Dutch city of Utrecht, was certainly informed by one of Dommersen's many trips to the Netherlands over the course of his life. Dommersen's works can be found in collections across the UK, including at Pembroke College, Cambridge, and the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle.

        Nov. 16, 2022

William Buelow Gould, Australian 1803-1853 Still life scenes wi

        Est: £600 - £800

William Buelow Gould, Australian 1803-1853 Still life scenes with dead rabbit and birds; oils on canvas, each 25.6 x 30.5 cm., two (2). Provenance: Private Collection, UK. Note: We are grateful to Dr Garry Darby for confirming the attribution of the present pair of paintings. Gould was a British-born Tasmanian artist, who was transported to Australia as a convict in 1827. Drawing on the artistic training which he received before his transportation, Gould continued to practice painting and watercolour whilst in Australia, producing still-lives and botanical studies whilst under placement as a house servant to two amateur natural historians, Dr James Scott and Dr William de Little. The present works, depicting tables laden with dead birds and game (as in many of Gould's paintings) recall the compositions of Flemish artists such as Joachim Beuckelaer (c.1533-c.1570), but are nevertheless imbued with the artist's highly distinctive style. These pieces therefore fit very neatly into Gould's oeuvre, displaying a striking similarity with the paintings held by institutions such as the Art Gallery of South Australia and the Art Gallery of New South Wales. For further information on the artist and his oeuvre, see Garry Darby, 'The life and works of William Gould', Sydney, 1980.
