CHESTER GOULD (1900-1985) "Orphan Nancy!" Group of 10 daily comic strips from 1929.

            Est: $2,500 - $3,500

CHESTER GOULD (1900-1985) "Orphan Nancy!" Group of 10 daily comic strips from 1929. Pen and ink with blue pencil on Bristol board. 178x572 mm; 7x22 1/2 inches. Each signed "Chester Gould" and with King Features Syndicate, Inc. pastedown label. Gould was most famous for his Dick Tracy comic strip, which he began only two years after this popular but short-lived strip about a feisty young lady. Left as a baby on the doorstep of three male artists Barclay, Kit, and Jimmy, and their housekeeper, Mother Gale, Nancy was adopted, raised, and adored by them. This group of strips focuses on Nancy's impending twelfth birthday and her growing curiosity about her birth parents. A tender and very gender-role bending strip from Gould's early days before he became known for his hard-edged detective hero.

            Chester Gould (American 1900-1985)

            Est: £100 - £150

Chester Gould (American 1900-1985) Ink drawing of Dick Tracy signed and inscribed 'TO / HIRSH / COHEN / with best / wishes / CHESTER / GOULD' ink on Dick Tracy letterheaded paper 28 x 21.5cm Footnote: Born in Oklahoma in 1900, Chester Gould is most widely acclaimed for his creation of the iconic Dick Tracy comic strip which was distributed by the Chicago Tribune, New York News Syndicate between 1931 and 1977 and followed the, often violent and gruesome, exploits of the titular police detective, Dick Tracy. Although Gould’s comic was criticised for its gratuitous and explicit violence, it was also this unflinching realism that made the strip truly pioneering. Whilst earlier serialised comic strips had gravitated towards the romantic and sensational, Gould was steadfast in his approach, even going so far as to study courses in forensic science and he worked alongside the Chicago police department to learn about investigative procedures. In addition to the forensic techniques such as ballistic testing, fingerprinting and fabric analysis illustrated in Dick Tracy, Gould’s comic also featured a number of technological innovations, such as the two-way wrist radio pictured in the letterhead of the present lot.

Chester Gould Unpublished Introductory Meet Bright Lights Brady Try-Out Daily Comic Strip Original Art (1930). Chester Gould was dedicated to success as a cartoonist. After mastering the lessons set forth in W. L. Evans' influential mail-order cartooning course, Gould left Pawnee, Oklahoma to pursue his career in Chicago. Before he hit the big time with Dick Tracy, Gould worked on humorous strips such as Fillum Fables, Radio Lanes, and The Girl Friends among others. A year before Tracy debuted, Big Lights Brady was created for this beautifully designed, unpublished introductory try-out strip. This daily gives a rare glimpse into an early effort of Chester Gould's cartooning talent. The daily has an image area of 20" x 6", and the art is in Excellent condition.
