Signed in Georgian and dated, lower right. Vladimir Lado Gudiashvili, a Georgian painter, graphic artist, monumentalist, theater and cinema artist, book illustrator, Peoples Artist of Georgia, and laureate of the Shota Rustaveli Prize, is one of the outstanding representatives of Georgian modernism. Lado Goudiachvili (Georgian, Soviet, 1896 - 1980), pencil on paper drawing depicting a portrait of a man and a bottle of Akhetian wine, 1972. Signed in Georgian on the lower left. Inscribed in Georgian and dated on verso. Lado Goudiachvili was a Georgian painter, draughtsman, illustrator and stage designer. From 1910 to 1914 he trained at the Tiflis School of Painting and Sculpture and from 1919 to 1926 at the Academie Ronson in Paris. While in Paris he became closely acquainted with Modigliani, Ignacio Zuloaga, Natalya Goncharova and Mikhail Larionov.

GOUDIACHVILI Lado Davidovtch (1896-1980) Le Poète et sa Muse Huile sur toile Signée et datée «L. Gudiachvili 23» en bas à droite 65 x 52 cm. Peint en 1923 Provenance : Collection Balanchine. Offert dans les années 60 par Balanchine lors de son séjour à Tiflis à un proche connu du monde de l’art. Puis par descendance au propriétaire actuel. Bibliographie : La version graphique du tableau est reproduite dans « Fantasies of a Georgian prince. Drawing by Lado Goudiachvili », in Asia, The American Magazine on The Orient, avril, 1923, p. 255. Cette toile appartient à la période parisienne de l’artiste, alors qu’il fréquentait Modigliani et tous les peintres célèbres de l’époque. Bien qu’il fût prince, sa grande pauvreté l’obligeait souvent à employer d’anciennes toiles, comme il le fit pour ce tableau, dont la toile porte encore la marque d’un atelier parisien de la fin du XIXe siècle. La Muse et le poète, est une composition où l’on retrouve la ligne élégante et sinueuse de Goudiachvili mêlée à une étonnante modernité dans la répartition des personnages. Les visages s’ordonnent selon une une hiérarchie iconique ne laissant aucune marge à l’espace. Cette totalité est pleine des regards qui se croisent, se cherchent, mais semblent se fuir. Image de l’amour du poète pour sa Muse, sentiment incertain, bien que puissant qui doit affronter la jalousie des deux perdants.
